attempting to apply for the 10 free sessions with a psychologist

attempting to apply for the 10 free sessions with a psychologist

For the past 2 years if I wanted to get couselling or some form of sessions, I had to pay out of pocket costing roughly $80 to $200 per 1 hour sessions. I tried getting the free sessions earlier but I was classed as a 'low priority', hence they wouldn't allow me to get the services. Granted I have a place to live and job, but the job is low paying and just covered rent, bills, and study fees.

I was referred to this horrendous psychologist that I could afford to see every few months, when I tried going through the mental centre to find a new psychologist or counsellor, they first tried to refer me back to her then tried sending me to even more expensive psychologists, meanwhile the counsellors cost a lot less but were always busy.

I've finished work in VIC and have moved to QLD to a more major city with a 'headspace' close to where I am living. I generally don't want to take medication but since like the start of this year I've been getting worse. I also more recently have been hearing a voice that I am aware isn't real but it sounds like a man crossed with a woman, or possibly a woman with a deep voice otherwise a man with a high voice?

The first time I heard it, I was laying in bed thinking about a meal plan for my sister's dog (I was looking after it). I was deciding what meal to cook it, when this voice just started rambling about it being a good idea, it then later started randomly agreeing to things I think about or sort of encouraging me to do things.

My grandfather had schizophrenia, my mother has bi-polar, and a lot of my relatives have depression and anger problems. However in the past 2+ years I've been becoming increasingly antisocial and moody, while I keep thinking about hurting people. I mainly don't want to go to jail but I'm also concerned about going to a ward as well.

Though in typing that I know rather a few people who probably belong in mental wards, are out roaming the streets freely anyway.

Hi @Quinn
Go to a GP and tell the doc about the things you've described here. Specifically request a mental health plan so you can see a psychologist on a bulk billing basis. Ask the doc for a recommendation for someone who has experience with the type of symptoms you're experiencing. Do mention the family history of schizophrenia and bipolar as this is very important.

You don't need to be homeless or unemployed to get a mental health plan. So make sure you insist on the doc providing one. Make a double appointment as this is usually required for a mental health plan and this appointment should be bulk billed as there is a special category of Medicare payment to the doctor for this.

Do let us know how you go. Take care 🎶

yes I agree with Kurra, double appointment vital because drss these days seem to panic if you start asking questions in a single session timeframe. personally I write down stuff before I go because when I get in there I sometimes block. say what you need to even if you become distressed. get it out how important it is and especially how long. a good doctor will see that you are accepting that you are unwell at the moment and needing help that you are entitled to. take care

Hello @Quinn,

You sound like you are really aware of how these problem thoughts are interfering with your life, such as making you moody and anti social, I think it would be helpful for you to go on the Mental Health Plan for some sessions like @Kurra and @Former-Member said, have you had a chance to also go into Headspace and get linked in with someone there, especially if you feel like you are at risk of hurting someone this would make you high priority and it would definitely be worth mentioning that to them?

In the mean time it might be helpful for you to work on your self-care, are there things that you like to do that make you feel good at home? Or just help to take your mind off things?

Take care,

Lunar

Hi @Quinn I agree with all the advice here.

Have you also considered seeing a psychiatrist? I know you've said you don't particularly want to take medication but it might be worth talking to someone about the pros and cons.

It is disturbing that out of all that "help",there sounds like there was no actual duty of care.Someone could had advised you go to to doctor and get a mental health plan .Please go to the doctor to arrange a psychiatrist to keep you and everyone safe ,or walk into any hospital if you feel these you are going to act on these thoughts.

Anyone can get a mental health plan (I thought), but you need a mental illness diagnosis, so you need to find a gp who either agrees with one you have been given or will give you one...

Also, not all psychologists will bulk bill on a mental health plan, so you may have to pay some of the standard fee.

I'm sorry you have not got to the help & support you needed & I hope you can access it soon...

If the thoughts of harming others (or yourself) become more intense or overwhelming please go to the hospital...

All the best,

Ahimsa - Namaste,

Anna
