Thick with the ‘tism – ASD Social Space

Thick with the ‘tism – ASD Social Space

Howdy forums fam, it’s your pal Jynx here to start up a new social space specific to folks with Autism Spectrum Disorder. ASD is often marked by unique styles of communication, unique life challenges, and unique perspectives on the world, so I figured it would be awesome to have a space for us to come together to share/chat/support each other!

This space is open to all who identify as autistic, including those who suspect they might be autistic but haven’t gotten a diagnosis, or want to explore the experiences and insights from other autistic folk to understand lived experience of ASD a bit better.

Allistic (non-austistic) members are also welcome, but please do remember to centre the voices of our autistic members and respect their lived experience. We’re not here to debate autism, we’re here to connect in a safe space.

To kick off the conversation I’d like to ask about everyone’s special interests! Mine is D&D – feel free to ask me about it and I’ll talk your ear off!

Please tag anyone you feel would be interested in joining this space!

💜😊👾

Re: Thick with the ‘tism – ASD Social Space

hello @Jynx

hubby was wondering what the difference is between autism and asperges ?

Re: Thick with the ‘tism – ASD Social Space

@Shaz51 Asperger's was a name for what is now called 'level 1' or 'high functioning' autism I believe. It was named after someone called Asperger who as it turns out was a nasty kinda guy - at least that is my understanding. So the diagnosis got folded into the banner of autism. I imagine there's more to it but that's what I know 😉

@Shaz51 the DSM edition

Asperger was a German who differentiated Autism from Aspergers. Deeming Aspergers as useful slaves.

That's my understanding

@Shaz51

asperger's stopped being diagnosed in 2013 with the DSM-5 and has been folded in under autism. their diagnostic criteria were the same except for asperger's having no language delay as a child and no intellectual disability

also @DogMan79 hans asperger was austrian but he was in bed with the nazis all the same

OK

I'm mid/late 40s

For years, Autistic friends have deemed me an "Honorary Autistic"

4 out of 6 niblings are Autistic

I highly suspect that DogMum was

Since 2022, my healthcare team have been encouraging me to engage with the possibility.likelihood that I am Autistic

My most recent MHCP states:

"Thank you for seeing [DogMan] for a further initial 6 sessions of psychoRx for chronic psychosis , MDD and ASD on a new MHCP attached with thanks."

So I don't know if I have a Dx. My GP formerly worked in psychiatry for 25 years, specialising in neurocognitive conditions. He has been asking various screening questions like "Did you engage in pretend play as a child?" for years

I'm not certain if ASD answers any of the questions which I have about my mind. I do have questions, but I don't know if ASD addresses them

Recently though, I've read a bit about Anger Rumination as well as Some well regarded resources on Adult presentation

But ideally, I'd like a book or audiobook to read. There doesn't appear to be one go-to "Bible" in the same way that Trauma has "The body keeps the score"

I've heard really good things about 'Unmasking Autism' by Devon Price @DogMan79 - I've been meaning to get around to reading it so can't say for sure but thought I'd share anyway 😊

@DogMan79 NeuroTribes by Steve Silberman is another famous Autism Book that i haven't read, although it is more of a cultural history of autism

i was a rageaholic up until i graduated high school. sometimes i miss my rages. my life feels stale and boring now i can't get high on the anger rush. this is unrelated to autism but ron and pat potter-efron wrote a series of books on anger - my top 3 in descending order are Angry All The Time, Healing the Angry Brain, and Letting Go of Anger (which is about the 11 "anger styles"). i would say they were the only two people who understood my anger. patricia died in 2022 and i wrote an email to ron saying, well, i guess there's only one person left now. he wrote back saying "But I wonder if anybody really understands them yet" and i think about it a lot

I might get to the deeper history at a later stage

But anger became more problematic for me with lockdown in Melbourne. ASD is just one possible link. I ultimately want to understand my rage and anger, but I'm not receiving answers in any meaningful way
