Mental health and stigma

Mental health and stigma

I’m passionate about going into social work and reducing mental health stigma in the health system. I’m also currently doing an assignment on mental health stigma, but feel like it’s raising a lot of frustration within me

Very true. Grief can be so tough. There's no direct timeline about when grief 'should be' over @creative_writer . One can only allow grief to take it's course. At the same time, talking to people about it can bring much healing. It sounds like your mum was quite alone at that time.

@tyme, I think she did feel alone. I think she has struggled over the years, I never really realised how deep the grief was until I accidentally triggered it last year. Instead of comforting her, I shut down, I guess I was there to get support from her, but then pain from her grief started rising to the surface, so I just walked away. Maybe I should’ve done something, but I was not in a good mental space so I couldn’t think. I think grandpa was her supporter and protector in a way, so loss was very hard

Yet at the same time, I recognise you were trying to survive as well @creative_writer

@tyme, but I walked away. I don’t know if I should’ve done that, my mum just wanted support, I felt like I failed her. Her words stung, she said only grandpa truly loved her. Maybe she was emotional and wasn’t thinking. Did I do something wrong? Was the love I gave her not enough?

It sounds like she was hurting @creative_writer . You are not to blame. You know she loves you. She may not know how to show it due to her own upbringing and trauma, but I believe you are a close knit family.

@tyme, I know she loves me. But does she truly believe I love her too? Or maybe she was hurting too much then. I think honestly I felt like she was disappointed that her emotional needs weren’t being met, it somehow felt like my fault. I’m not sure what she wanted me to do.

I’ve been super cautious ever since, I don’t want to bring up anything in her by discussing my mental health. I feel like inter generational trauma is a real thing too, my grandparents were alive during war, they saw so much chaos
