Medication question

Medication question

Good morning.

(Please see my past posts for the back story)

Does anyone have any experience with *** [removed med name by moderator] injections for bipolar mania and psychosis?

My husband had one, then another 5 days later (9 days ago) and has been discharged on a 16 week community treatment order. He will now receive monthly injections I believe.

He has elected to stay somewhere else for now and to not come home. He is still only speaking to me via email in response to me reaching out and discussing some household logistics that couldn't wait and really only says to leave him alone, I've caused him pain, he'll touch base with me in 2 weeks and that I should consider breaking our lease (we rent out home).

My question is - is it still too soon after starting meds to be taking this to heart yet?

This was his 1st hospitalization, first bipolar diagnosis.

Thanks 🙏

Hi @Reggiethecat

Nice seeing you back on the forum.

Sorry that things do not seem to be going as planned.

I do not know anything about that partjcular medication.

I do know with "unstable" situations there is no "magic pill"

Time, frustration, patience unwelcome comments and no recognition for our help are hard medications we give freely.

Tough situation. I think your husbands brother was assisting.

Horrible situation to worry about leases and expenses. Leases are not just shut and new places found.

Nice to see you here as one means for you

Re: Medication question

Thanks. I've just spoken with his brother and while he's 'stable' he's certainly not got his brain back in his head yet.
It seems he's still manic. Thankfully he is seeing his case manager tomorrow.
Time and patience I guess. I have vowed not to make any major decisions regarding the house etc until he can sit with me face to face and I can see that he's back.
It's been 32 days since I've seen him 😩

Hi @Reggiethecat

If you can type @ and select the name you are replying to. Gets to person easier.

32 days is a long time, but there is a reason.

Mental Health issues take a long time and patience.

I feel your anguish. He may not come back the same for a long time if at all. There may be side affects of mefication.

It is natural to feel hurt and.estranged.

To me, you will be in a carer role for awhile. You may have to stand back as a wife and support him. His mind sounds confused. He needs to feel trust. Sounds strange after so long. So is Dementia. Family takes ages if ever to understand why they are forgotten in a short time.

I am glad you are on the forum.

Do not make major changes like finishing lease because he told you. Once he stabilises, he may not remember it. The assessment period is often like a drunken blur.

Stay with it.

You are very caring. Focus on the carers role in your life for now.

It is a very sad time with loved ones

Re: Medication question

All I can offer is commiseration. My partner was the wonderful man I love for a few months while he was medicated on a particular dose of two drugs. He then mentioned to his psychiatrist that he would like to be more motivated at work so he was told to adjust his dosage, bringing one drug to zero. That has gradually led to him being more and more angry over the past few months, making him very difficult to live with.

He then had the flu last week, was off his meds completely and was having angry and violent episodes daily (punching walls, throwing furniture, etc) until last night when he had another outburst, said it was over between us, packed his things, took his dog and left to stay with his parents.

I haven’t contacted his Drs to voice my concerns because I wanted to respect and support him in trying to get his motivation back at work. But I know him quite well so I’m quite sure in his mind, it’s over and I’m kicking myself for not intervening sooner and not getting the help I needed for myself to be able to deal with his moods in a better, informed way. This condition has taken the man I love with all my heart and soul, and replaced him with a violent, abusive stranger who thinks I’m completely evil when all I’ve done is advocate for him and compromise for him. And there’s nothing I can do about it. 😢

I’m going to be contacting his Doctors first thing on Monday morning to voice my concerns but I know it’s too late. I think if your husband is just asking for space and time, he’ll be ok and there’s a good chance he’ll come back to you. My partner was never able to verbalise his needs for space and I wasn’t able to take the physical cues so he would accuse me of provoking him.

Stay strong and just send him love. Time is a healer. 💕
