Tips for self-care

Tips for self-care

Here's a few tips for self-care which helped me when I was so depressed it was an effort to even get out of bed

1. acknowledge even small achievements such as having a shower by writing in your diary every day about what you achieved that day. Even if it may seem insignificant to other people if it is significant to you that is all that matters. I used to count things such as the following as achievements:

having a shower,

calling a friend,

doing self care activities (such as listening to mindfulness tracks or music on spotify)

getting out of bed and sitting up for 30 minutes

2. Break tasks into manageable bits by doing the activity for 10 minutes and resting/rewarding yourself for 20 minutes. For example, since I started getting symptoms of bi-polar 2 and severe depression I do my housework by setting my phone alarm for 10 minutes and doing the washing up then resting for 20 minutes doing something I enjoy such as having a coffee, reading a magazine, phoning a friend, listening to music, putting hand cream on, listening to a meditation track on spotify or putting hand cream on.

Hi @Marulu1

I agree.

One thing at a time at your pace.

We say Smell the Roses.

And pat yourself on the back after each one.

We compliment others all the time, but not many see our humble achievements.

Humble achievements. Not minimal.

Take a pat on the back from me for your excellent post!

Great strategies.

Hi @Marulu1

I like these suggestions. Thank you.

My dietitian gave me an analogy the other day. When I start a task I don’t usually finish it. She said to try and think of it as cleaning your teeth. You just do it. You put the toothpaste on the toothbrush but you don’t leave it, you finish cleaning your teeth.

I’ve tried using it. I put the dishes in the dishwasher but don’t turn it on. Now I sat to myself finish brushing your teeth and I turn it in. It has helped me in completing a lot of things that I always only have finish.

@Marulu1 and Everyone

I have a sibling who was recently smashed by severe depression. It’s been hard to know how to support her - she’s not available by phone and has cancelled a few catch ups. I know she is in ongoing contact with my mum which is great.

You're right about just cleaning up her room and even getting out of bed. She did celebrate these things with me and was very positive. Upon sharing this with her doctor she was assured she is not ready to go back to work, which is devastating as she’s a very high performer and feels guilty about letting work down.

She was recently give the go-ahead to trial a return to work. She again became despondent as she found that the simplest things such as typing had to almost be relearned. Her fingers just couldn’t follow the instructions from her brain.

She has now fully relapsed and asked to be excused from our usual catch-up. I don’t know what to say to her or find a way to support her. If you could give me any tips apart from the gold suggestions above that would be very much appreciated.
