I found getting a borderline personality disorder diagnosis very helpful

I found getting a borderline personality disorder diagnosis very helpful

I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2005. I was very angry with the psychiatrist although I had already diagnosed myself based on what I had read. While I still have lingering issues with the way I was told, I have used the DSM V nine criteria, all of which I fulfil, as a descriptive diagnosis and checklist for healing. I looked at all the symptoms and worked on them with my therapist and practiced skills (not DBT) at home during my work/family/friends life. It took me a very long time to change the way I viewed the outside world and I now get it right most of the time. I used to smash things, video players, vacuum cleaners and plates and cups and found it impossible to hold down a job. I also found it difficult to keep long term relationships and lost many friends. I now use mindfulness skills to keep my emotions in control.

My thought processes are a lot more flexible now and I have put personal boundaries in place. I work as a peer support worker in the mental health industry and a greater majority of my clients have a diagnosis of BPD which they are finding it difficult to accept and neither should they accept what does not sit well with them. Not everyone wants to accept this stigmatising diagnosis and it may not be the right one for them. The DSM is by no means perfect and is only a description of external behaviour, it does not take into account the beautiful person you are when not unwell. You are not your diagnosis, but you can use it as a blueprint for gaining mental wellness, if you feel this is a useful tool.

I am starting up a BPD consumer support group in Western Australia in January, 2015. The premise of this is social inclusion, psychoeducation of the symptoms, how to deal with them, coping strategies, support, sharing and caring of stories and friendship. I was in over-eaters anonymous years ago and found the friendship and support there invaluable.

My questions are: Has getting a diagnosis helped you? How was it delivered to you? (I found out mine in a letter to my GP, the psychiatrist did not discuss this with me). Would you attend a support group for people with BPD if one was near you?

I would really appreciate your feedback on this as I want to be able to help give the right support in the right way that suits others.

@Phoenix_Rising,

Wow I didn't think it was possible to live that long with this condition.

Well where I live nobody specialise or thinks it isn't a serious condition that I have come across or heard of. Even when my doctor wrote a letter to our mental health services that is our local crisis, mental health wards and everything service. Basically said there is no treatment available in the area for it.

lil-caterpillar,

It is giving me something to do.

But all this isolation is seriously not helping.

I am seeing a specialist, getting all these test done and have to see a psychiatrist before I can go back to work. I am a safety hazard. I am currently blacking out randomly at anytime. Nobody knows why

Well definently need to get your health worked out first @Flameslinger
Can you organise a get together at your house with some of your workmates?
Or invite a family member or something over to just watch a movie or whatever youd like to do or what you share a sommon interest in?

Re: I found getting a borderline personality disorder diagnosis very helpful

@Flameslinger Yep, it's a damn long time to keep muddling through the very big muddle that is BPD. I do it one day at a time - often one hour at a time. I have only been hanging out here on the forums for a couple of months. If you do a search of "riding a wave" you will see how I muddle through some of the darker times of my muddle.

It does change as you get older @Flameslinger Research shows that without any treatment at all, the nature of BPD changes over time. Being able to get good support super helps though. The best thing I ever did was purchase the dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) treatment manual and skills training manual by Marsha Linehan. You may have heard of DBT? I've never actually done DBT in a group or therapy setting - I just bought the treatment manual and skills training manual and worked through it by myself - much cheaper!!!! It isn't a magic fix - thus why I still super struggle, but it really did help a lot. I know that I'm in a different space to where I was 20 years ago. Is it a better space??? I'm not sure...but it is different.

I'm going to jump off the forum now. I hope you have a peaceful day @Flameslinger.

HI

I am new here , like in the last 20 mins 🙂

I have anxiety, depression, PTSD and was diagnosed with BPD in June 2016. I struggle every moment of every single day, sometimes not able to get out of my own mind.

Thought I would say hi

Re: I found getting a borderline personality disorder diagnosis very helpful

@Former-Member,

I have been trying to but no luck. I enjoyed it being home alone after work to relax and be myself completely. But now it is just pushing my limits. Like last night before going to bed I had a huge flashback episode. Then when I got to sleep I keep waking up screaming. But this morning at 4am the fire alarm went off for three minutes.

@Phoenix_Rising,

I do have a DBT book that was given to me by my previous psychologist. We were working on it together got 10 pages in. But then I wasn't allowed to use the service anymore. The book I have is called: The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook by Mathew McKay, PH.D ~ Jeffery C. Wood, PSY.D ~ Jeffery Brantley, MD.
But I have no motivation to do it. Last time I did it I was struggling to answer the question.

@Feather,

Welcome. I haven't been on here long. But I am finding it awesome. The people here are very beautiful with attitude. So far I have found. I have the same conditions as you.
