Dumb question, but… why is mental health important, anyway?
I'm going through a huge life transition right now.
The first time I felt love for someone, it was bad. Despite cries that I'm a lovely person and I would have a lot to offer someone, no-one has been remotely interested since then.
I’m from a culture where they do semi-arranged marriages, and my family has been strongly encouraging me to consider it. In the next six months, if not sooner, my Mum and I will have to go to our home country and organise it. Frustratingly, my Mum has been talking to people about me marrying one of my distant (ish) relatives. I have repeatedly said, that is not an option. Is no-one else available? Apparently it’s not uncommon. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip were third cousins. It’s apparently not even that dangerous, but I would much prefer to not do that.
Someone at my work is about to go to the United States for the same thing, to marry a woman from his culture.
That doesn’t change the fact, though, that I wish it was different.
When I was hurt, my friend said words that will stick in my head for as long as I live.
There are so many people out there that would absolutely adore you, so please don’t waste your time on people who don’t feel the same way you do.
I don’t know what was going through her […] bloodstream when she said that. Way to get my hopes up.
I’m sure when she said there were so many people out there for me, semi-arranged marriage is not what she meant.
Every day, watching other people talk about their relationships, those words play in my head.
Can you imagine a whole lifetime like that? It’s like being a midwife when you know you can never have a baby. It would be unbearable.
It makes me so angry. “So many people” my […] foot.
[…]!
I believed her at the time.
Now, when people tell me that everything will be OK, why should I believe them?
In the name of mental wellbeing, I can tell myself that everything will be OK and I’m worthy of love. Why should I believe myself? Is it going to wind the clock back? Is it going to change anything?
From a mental health perspective, it’s no big deal. There’s more to life than relationships.
Yes, I can probably live a life where I never have an organic relationship, and I just have a bad memory to look back on. Yes, I can survive and even thrive in that life.
But if I accept that, what other circumstances should I passively accept?
It feels like from a mental health perspective, people can do whatever the […] they want to me and I can have all of life’s challenges thrown at me, but it’s OK because I still have the sun. Nothing can take that away from me! It doesn’t make sense.
I just can’t believe that it’s gotten to this stage. I went to University for three years. I “put myself out there”, and it didn’t work. I had my chance, and I failed. It feels like the worst possible failure. If I looked a little better, or been a little less me, I might have attracted someone, and this never would have happened. I might have had two kids by now. But I just wasn’t able to. I wasn’t good enough. I can be good enough for my arranged wife, but that’s simply not the point.
