Something’s not right

Facing Self Honesty.

Facing Self Honesty.

So I've been doing it again, doing and saying and not saying things to please the people in my life, and myself. That very familiar comfortable habit that protects me, basically being very dishonest with myself and those in my life. I seem to be scared, daunted and overwhelmed by the 'honesty and honouring self gift basket '. It goes against everything I have ever been! I have already opened the self honesty door and experienced situations where I (uncomfortably but with necessary bravery) have practiced honesty, and oh my how liberating it feels, especially when received well! But facing how I really feel or not feel about someone close and facing myself, and it's not what I like, but it's true(?), well that has been like opening a Pandora Box and it's a mass of conflicting information and emotions that has left me completely burnt out and highly frustrated! The lack of my understanding of my emotions, reactions etc. makes for greater frustration. The lack of support and no one to confide in when I need to does not help neither. That particular idea is one of mine that believes if I need a friend ear, then I have to give back the same whenever they need (possible ingrained false belief?). the problem is, until I finally learn to truly accept and love myself first, I have little, sometimes nothing to give back. My bucket is empty and I cannot 'try' or 'should' as well as I could in the past. I don't want to 'should' at my own detriment anymore.. I don't like to be dishonest anymore and I am also shit scared of being honest, it is so unfamiliar...

Hi @De-Conditioning

A lot to absorb and l do not have it all.

Glad you are on the forum.

I may interpret some wrong so do not be offened please.

You say lack of support. This forum, Sane Counselling and Lifeline offer support. It may not be thecsupport you desire, but it is a good place to vent.

Not all ears expect youbto be theirs. I prefer listening to others issues as l have found my own sources to "unload on"

No obligation here to listen to others issues. Your choice.

I agree it is good to accept and love yourself first. If you do not believe in yourself, it is hard for others to believe.

You sound alert and aware.

You sound like you know what makes you sad and happy. That is a good start.

Your bucket is empty. My emotional bucket empties too. I relax. Ignore the issues and noise. Listen to good music. Shift the focus from what triggers the emotional drain.

I admire your courage to share

Hey there @De-Conditioning . Can you try starting with small things like saying no thank you. Or organising catch ups on another day that is more suitable for you. Learn to sit and push through the discomfort. If you start small you can slowly build your confidence.

You know I love it on the forums when the members vent about some BS situation they have gone through. They just say how they feel, regardless of being right or wrong, it doesn’t matter, it’s about freedom of expression. They just don’t give a shit about trying to fit into a box and I love it! It’s more important to tell it how it is and how we feel what we feel than to sugarcoat. It’s refreshing and it’s ok!.

maybe you can safely practice in the forums and just let it all out. Say what you really think, feel what you feel. It’s ok!

Re: Facing Self Honesty.

Hi and welcome, @De-Conditioning , I really like your username 🙂

I can relate...I am now 51 and it's only in the last 10 years or so that I started being authentic with people. (Not with my abusive family members though - it's not safe to be my real self with them.) It's such a good feeling to be honest. I ran out of emotional energy to be deceptive.

But it's very scary at first. You feel like you're walking a high tightrope without a safety net. Being dishonest has protected our real selves so far in our life.

You can confide in us here...we are all anonymous so it's safer. Gradually it will feel less scary to be honest, and you will adjust.

I like this so much - it's great advice, @Little_Leopard !

An important forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply @De-Conditioning .

@@@Thank You. It's unfamiliar to me being honest with myself and others. Among many other things it's one I am trying to work on. Your words help, thank you🙏
