Re: Depression - Just Can't Get Going

Re: Depression - Just Can't Get Going

Thank you Tawney for sharing this post. I'm just going through an episode my self 😞 For three days I'm in bed after it slowly developing for weeks now. I planned to do things - but I dont. It does not cross the barrier from thinking to acting. Everything hurts, I'm crying without knowing exactly what I'm crying about. Luckily I was off work the last days, but I can hardly function at work in general. And working is hard. You have to 'play' a role the whole time to be accepted by healthy people and not labelled the 'weirdo'. My memory, my enthusiasm or motivation for work is nearly non-existant. I feel like just wanting to lay down, sleep and never wake up again, all the time. I cannot talk with anyone about it, as nobody here knows what I'm going through. It is hard. Still I feel this pain inside me everyday. On other days I'm just numb and cry. I'm on medication for my bi-polar, but sometimes I start thinking it is the wrong one. I do not have highs anymore, but now I'm constantly trapped in a low. I caught my self in questioning the purpose of me being here and accompanied thoughts. I'm living a bit rural, so all support groups are quiet far away and I'm scared of attending. I'm not on centrelink so I have to work. It is so much pressure. It is so hard to keep on going and doing the right thing on the side, like not drinking, doing recreational drugs or eating the wrong foods. And like the article said, it is hard to just get out of bed and moving. I feel I'm not alone and I'm with anyone out there who suffers too.

I hear you @traveline. I too have bipolar so I have a good understanding of how awful you must feel.

Have you seen your psychiatrist recently? I understand living in a rural area makes it more difficult but even though my psychiatrist is 300kms away he's quite happy to do telephone consultations when I'm not well enough to travel. If he prescribes me a new medication he posts it to me and if it's really urgent he will also fax the script to my nearest Chemist so I can get the med straight away. I just have to take the original to the chemist when the postman delivers it.

Take care. Thinking of you 💕 🎶

Hi @traveline, hope you don't mind but I moved your post to somewhere I thought it would be more visible and likely to attract support 🙂

@traveline I am sorry to hear about the rough time you are having at the moment. Bipolar can certainly interfere with these different aspects of our life - work, sleep, motivation, enthusiasm, relationships - all things you have touched on in your post.

Traveline sometimes when people have thoughts about going to sleep and not wanting to wake up in the morning, they might be thinking about suicide. If this is something that you've been thinking about lately, I encnrouage you to reach out for some more support. It sounds like you don't have many people to confide in but there are some organisations out there who you can turn to if those thoughts ever become overwhelming and you want to talk them through a bit more.

With bipolar (and many diagnoses) a decrease in motivation is very commonly experienced. While intellectually or logically you might have goals and plans in mind, putting those dreams and aspirations into practice can be extremely difficult and exhausting (crossing the barrier from thinking to action, as you describe it). I am sure many fellow members on here can relate to that aspect of what you're going through as well.

Does your work know about your diagnosis and/or are they supportive when you're going through an episode and need some time off? It sounds like you feel pressure to pretend everyting is okay around the people you work with - is that the case?

@Kurra it sounds like you have found yourself a terrific psychiatrist! I love to hear when mental health professionals go the extra mile (literally in this case) to ensure their clients are genuinely supported. What a keeper!

Sure is @Moasic! It's the same with my psychologist and GP. They work as a team even though they're not in the same towns. It doesn't let me get away with anything.

I'm very blessed to have such a cohesive team of professionals. 💕🎶

Re: Depression - Just Can't Get Going

Oh wow, thank you @Kurra. My GP said to ring her, so I did. But I would have to fill out forms first and it's a lengthy process to get the data send from one GP to the next and then find a psychologist for treatment and a psychiatrist for med adjustment. I might just ring the Psychiatrist straight as you did it. It was so expensive to see him, I shyed away from contacting him again... I noticed, being on the meds, my anxiety increased again and I want to come off it and start on something else. I thought my life would be better, but it's bad, just in another way. I think, if my anxiety would be less, I would be less afraid to go out in 'bad' times, hence connect more with people, be not so lonely and have less depression phases that do not last so long.. if that makes any sense at all? I also changed my diet, avoid food high in carbs and sugar, alcohol and so on. I feel it helps a little. Have you done any lifestyle changes that helped you or anything else that you think helped you?I halfed the meds now and start feeling edgy again. Already have forgotten how that feels. However, how do you cope? Thank you and all the best 😘

Re: Depression - Just Can't Get Going

Hi @traveline
It's so good to hear from you again. When you contact your GP it might be worth asking about medication that will help lessen the anxiety you experience.
There is a SSRI antidepressant that is especially effective for anxiety. My GP prescribed this for me early February this year. Within 4 days I was a completely different person and I no longer appear to have a problem with anxiety. It's a miracle!

In addition my bipolar is completely stable and has been since I started the SSRI. My treating team are amazed because my psychiatrist, my psychologist and GP didn't believe that my bipolar, being a particularly severe form, would ever become stable.

Thinking of you. I so hope you can get some relief soon. Hugzzz 💕 🎶

Hi @traveline

Sorry you have a bunch of unimaginative people in your workplace ... it can be a real pain ...

I had trimmed down sugar and alcohol consumption a long time ago ... but recently I have added carbs to the list .. not hugely reducing them, but putting fruit & veg in as major food source .. I feel better for it.

Take care of you

Hey @Appleblossom,

yes, I reduced alcohol and sugars as well, now mainly living from salads and meat. I feel better as well. Reduced my meds to 50% and feeling better! Haven't told my psych yet though, but getting around to it. Thanks for your support and all the best to you as well!

Re: Depression - Just Can't Get Going

That is so motivating to hear kurra 🙂 Hope you will feel better for a long time! Sometimes it is hard to imagine how to feel if not being anxious for no reason, especially having it for so long. Well, I reduced my mood stabiliser to 50% and starting to have my energy back. Drawback is, that I have problems sleeping again and sticking to routine, forgetting things and concentration. Like a person with ADHD I have alarms on all day to remind me of things and constantly have to pull back as I'm studying and getting distracted so quickly Also got another job with nice colleagues since yesterday, so that helps a lot! It keeps me busy and negative thoughts have not so much time to kreep in. Also contacted my doc for a psychotherapy, so I hope this will work out well.

I also asked my doc back than about an antidepressant (my stepfahter takes it, it starts with c). But the doc said it would not be the right thing for me, so he would not prescribe it to me and gave me the mood stabiliser instead. So I guess its a learning experience and you just got to find the right mix to get you going. Did you straight away found the right medication? Does it still work on you?

Thank you and take care
