My goal - no more SSRIs

My goal - no more SSRIs

This is my first time engaging in a saneforum. I just signed up today.

This forum was recommended to me from a consult today through our Employee Assistance Program (Uprise). I am looking for resources to help me reach my 2023 goal of not needing medication for anxiety. I have been taking it for 13 years.

Do you have a story of successfully weaning off an SSRI? I would love to hear how you did it.

I have tried in the past, but on my own and not with GP guidance either (which I will also get this time round).

Thank you in advance x

Re: My goal - no more SSRIs

hi @fullpotential

I've been on and off SSRI's in the past. (I am on one again, years later...)

What I did was scale back my dose until reaching 0mg's. This was under Dr supervision, although I did speed up the process beyond what was prescribed. So instead of taking a half dose for a month, I did it for just 2 weeks. Then another half dose again... But it was summer time, too. And this made a huge difference at that time, for the weather allowed me to engage positive, organic behaviours that regulated my hormones and circadian rhythm more than the winter wet would allow...so what that looked like were fuller working days ( I worked my farm) which meant I slept better. I ate better, too, since I had summer harvest ( being a homesteader, I had veggies and fruits galore); I was also able to exercise and go hiking with the family...

Welcome to SANE. I hope you're doing OK. Atleast you're looking forward to better days - which can be half the battle won already!

Re: My goal - no more SSRIs

Your experience may be different with anxiety @fullpotential but I was on 150% of the recommended maximum for depression. I tapered very slowly over 3 months, without supervision. I reduced in increments of half then quarter tablets rather than by halving the dose at each step.
