Support is great, until it's gone

Support is great, until it's gone

And not because you don't need it any more but because your time is up.

The worst part is that they gave me an end date and then blindsided me by "exiting" me three weeks earlier with no warning or explanation. It's like I was preparing to climb down a cliff, looking for a way down and they came along and pushed me. It's been over a month and I can't get over it. I wish I'd never trusted them.

Hello @mazarine

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds terrible, tho I do not fully understand. What was exiting mean? Did they make ongoing referrals?

Hope you get some sense of being heard on here.

Take care

Hi @mazarine it is nice to meet you.

Also welcome to the Sane Forums. I hope you can find some support on here.

It is hard when we lose our supports, especially if we have had them for some time and come to trust them, value them and rely on them. I'm sorry you have had to go through this.

I know it is not the same, but here at Sane you will find a lot of support from so many different people. I find it hard to get support so rely on these forums for many different things.

Just a hint, if you would like to tag anyone then just put a @ before their name and they will get a notification.

Again, welcome and looking forward to getting to know you better.

"Exiting" means ending support. I had been promised many times that I would be handed over to another service but it didn't happen.

@Appleblossom thank you for replying. I replied but didn't tag you. ""Exiting" means ending support. I had been promised many times that I would be handed over to another service but it didn't happen."

It sounds terrible to me, even the name of it. It is fine if there is a discharge due to condition being cured. Is there anyone to advocate for you @mazarine to actually get a proper referral? Please take good care of yourself.

I believe they should not be able to 'exit' people without ensuring the referral is complete and real. I have had some doozies in the past. There needs to be regulation @moderator around that practice. It seems unethical to me. Some regulatory body that is NOT the professional association or union based to advocate for workers without being fully transparent about the client, patient or consumer group it supposedly services.

Agree @Appleblossom it sounds unethical. Exiting sounds awful too. I used to advocate for people being discharged before they are ready when I worked for our local health service. Broke my heart to see them be told they had to ‘leave’ when they were so unwell 🥲

@Appleblossom no I don't have anyone, they were the people who were supposed to be advocating for me.

@mazarine Sorry to hear that. Did they give you reasons for stopping the support without ongoing referral.

I had a psychiatrist once who kept trying to tell me to go away, said I was fine, when I really needed support. Now when I think about that stage of my life and his behaviour. It fuels my drive to change the system and hold it more accountable.

I can share and support a little. I am just an unpaid peer worker of sorts. I have quals but not that particular one. The forum can be helpful over time, but takes a while to navigate if you are not used to it. I do not think it should be expected to replace formal supports. If you phone Sane they have a few other services, but maybe try next week, cos the weekend is coming up.

There is often a Friday Feast thread that people pop on in a social way ... as you feel like ...

Re: Support is great, until it's gone

@Appleblossom this is an organisation that provides community support. They do home visits and also run a group that was my only social contact.

They are supposed to give support in the short term (6 months or so) and find a longer term service to hand on to. I was with them for more than a year and in that time I was offered two options. One made a very bad impression on me and the worker who was present when I met with them (and there were more bad reports from other people later), and the other is online only. Despite them saying many times that they weren't going to leave me without support, that's exactly what happened in the end.

I could accept it if they couldn't find anything for me, although I'm once again doing very badly on my own. I can't accept the sheer cruelty of telling me an end date then pulling the rug out from under me three weeks earlier for no apparent reason. It would have been better never to have had it than to lose it like that.

I've seen other posts here from people who would probably benefit from community support but in good conscience I can't recommend that they take the risk.
