Old mentalities
I dont know how to get my Dad to change his old way of thinking about mental health or if I can.
There is a place in the city called the Urgent care mental health centre, its a place for people to find urgent councilling, it has areas to relax, colour in, watch TV. There are munchies and drinks etc. I was supposed to have surgery the other day and we were going to drop my sister off there as she didnt feel safe at home (something my Dad cant comprehend). I explained the place to Dad and he said "so its a kindergarten for nutters." Given my own MH issues I was pretty offended.
Im caring for my sister at the moment, Im the only one that she feels safe with but it means I am off work. Now I am keen to go back to work but I need her to be in a better place, I need her to not be self harming and ending up in hospital, I cant take time off regularly. That would be a very fast way for me to lose my job. Dad wants me back at work sooner rather than later and she can deal with him, he doesnt seem to get its not how it works.
Today, well last night there was an incident that needed ambulance and ER, my Dad essentially blamed her for it, that she had a choice and she chose wrong. Trying to get through to him that she is sick and she isnt (at the moment) capable of making healthy choices. Its not exactly an excuse but she has only just started her journey with BPD (diagnosed 3 weeks ago) and learning how to manage with DBT (second session).
Ive been dealing with BP2 w/ psychotic features, Anxiety and Depression for years. I cant help but wonder what crap he has said about me and my illnesses behind my back over the years.
Its not even that this is new to him, my Mum has suffered from Depression for their whole marriage 40+ years. Does go some way to understanding their marital issues.
I dont know how to speak to him about it, not that I think he will change but I am of the opinion that I will not be taking advise on how to handle the situation my sister and I are in, I think Ill let him have his opinions but I wont be taking much notice of them or him to an extent (respectfully)
