Low mood, increased meds

Low mood, increased meds

Hi everyone. I've been on an SSRI for about 2 years now, ever since I gave birth. I had anxiety before the birth but had pretty bad post-natal depression. Recently I don't feel like the meds have been working because my motivation, energy and enjoyment are very low. My doctor (gp) said I should try doubling my dose and see how that goes. I started that two days ago and it feels doubly low now. I just want to sit and stare. My limbs feel heavy and I'm easily irritated.Nothing seems to bring me joy, and all I want to do is sleep or eat.

Is this part of getting used to the medicine? Or am I hitting rock bottom?

Hi @Porcini

I've been in this predicament a few times. For me, an increase always means feeling worse before I'm better. This is pretty common from what I understand. I would give it a bit more time and see how you go. But sometimes an increase for me meant I felt really numb and 'lifeless'. So it wasn't always the answer. I would monitor your mood closely and let the dr know any concerns after a couple of weeks on an increased dose.

Sending hugs

Hanami

@Porcini I find it a very delicate balancing act. Not too much to effect ability to function, but enough to calm agitation or smooth out mood. Its hard when we are mothers.

Hi @Porcini,

I really feel for you as I can relate a little to what you have said. I have had three children and with one of my pregnancies I got both pre and post-natal depression. It can be really challenging to feel the way you describe but it is good to know that you are under the care of your GP.

I have been on and off medication for anxiety much of my adult life. I can only offer you my experience which was I did feel worse before I felt better. It took some time (felt like ages when I was going through it) but after a few days of taking it (I guess my body needed sometime to adjust to the medication) things did start to slowly improve and I did start to feel better. Maybe it's a bit of both (the medication and feeling like you are hitting rock bottom) but based on my experience this was how it was for me as well. I really hope you start to feel a bit better everyday and you will start to feel really okay very soon.

Best wishes,

FloatingFeather

Re: Low mood, increased meds

@Porcini some SSRI's do increase your appetite. And sometimes give you cravings, like, for carbs... And some are no more than tranquillisers, too. So maybe your experience is not uncommon.

You might consider discussing with your GP the option of changing medication rather than increasing, if you're not satisfied with your result?

All the best.

Re: Low mood, increased meds

Hi hope you feel better soon . Guided self-help involves working through a book or online course on your own or with some help from a therapist

maybe seek a second option and express your concerns that your feeling lower

Could be the medication is not the right one for you

if you need to sleep x

@Porcini I would definitely give it more time before judging the effects of the new med. They take at least 2 weeks to kick in, I believe.

Good luck...
