Medical Students Wanted!

Medical Students Wanted!

I'm really sceptical that I'll find people like me on this forum... Medical students that have experienced discrimination from their (medical) supervisors. I had to disclose my psychiatric illness to my GP supervisor (they wanted a copy of my police record and it has not guilty by reason of mental incompetence on it) and they gave me a really negative assessment, including slamming my professionalism because the Medical School should have let them know my psych condition before I arrived on the placement... So, I guess I'm sceptical that I really will find people like me on this forum, because I usually find it an infantilising environment that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole (it's frustrating that as a medical student I'm competent to discuss medication specifics etc but as soon as I identify as having lived experience I'm all of a sudden too vulnerable to go near those topics). But hey, the forum advertises itself as having people like me on it... Medical students who find it patronising. So... Any other medical students in their clinical years with serious psych illnesses on the forum? Or any who have graduated and working in medicine? By the way, prior to my supervisor, the most stigmatising comment about my particular psych illness came from another med student who had anxiety and depression herself and would consider herself an advocate for mental illness at med school, who made a negative comment about bipolar, completely unaware I had a severe form of the illness.

Welcome @AuntJobiska ,

Great you have joined us! I can't think of anyone off the top of my head for now, but if I do think of someone, I will tag them into your post.

There are certainly ones who have struggled during with studies based on the discrimination and stigma of MH.

I hope they will be able to share their experiences with you.
