I don't know what to do...

I don't know what to do...

There's someone in my life, that's family which has hurt me for too long. She's my older sister. This is going to be a bit long, but I guess I'm just really upset now and I need some input on the whole thing. It's as if I've taken a step back from this situation, and attempting to evaluate it for what it is at the moment. I'm trying to find meaning, and learn from it. At this point in time, ultimately I want to come to the decision. Should I keep this person in my life? Or cut them out completely... for they may be detrimental to my own growth as a person.

She's just a nasty person. She treats me badly. Calls me many things, has petty jabs at me whenever she can. Whether it has to do with my appearance, my intelligence, my lack of friends, my never having a relationship. The situation is that I live with her, and her daughter with my parents and uncle. I'm a University student, at that age of fragility I suppose where you're attempting to find your identity. She, is about a decade or so older than me. She had a break-down earlier this year after splitting from a ten year relationship, and went on a spree of having intercourse with random guys she'd meet on the internet. She fell hard for one of them, and was on the verge of suicide. I had to act as her confidante for an entire year, attempting to coax her out of doing so. She was on the floor, a writhing mess. She wanted to end herself, but I comforted her out of it. From then on, I continued listening to her complaining about life. How she hated people out of just the way they looked, as if they were lesser beings due to being 'ugly'. How her friends were all 'fake and stupid bitches'. I just had to sit there and nod my head. When it came to conversation with her it was always one-sided. Whenever I seeked comfort or someone to confide in when things got tough, she'd ignore me completely. Not on purpose- no. It was if she lacked the very facility to comfort anyone sincerely. She wouldn't say anything, she'd just look away as if I didn't say a word. The lights were on her, always. She'd immidately turn the conversation back onto herself, and I'd have to forget about my pains and struggles. She was more important. She'd do me favors, I'd appreciate it. Such as spotting me lunch and such. Looking back however, I felt as if I was her pet. If I didn't obey any of her rules, she'd be quick to shout 'After all I've done for you'. Every move I made was used against me.

Out of being her confidante for an entire year, I saw her from a different perspective. Who she truly was. I went from admiring her, to loathing her. It dawned on me, after her brief explosion towards me, some nights ago that: "This woman hates me, and she will never see me differently."

I don't know why though. I never did anything... she just hates me. She just hates me.

She called me a number of things, which perplexed me. Saying I was immature, spoilt, ingrateful, and that I thought I ran the household. I don't, not one bit. It just confuses me. Where an earth would something like this come from? I like to pretend it doesn't hurt me, like it doesn't effect me. Like I have strength in me. But that's not true. It does hurt me. It does. I cry in the bathroom because I can't let her see this, because if she sees this... she feels empowered. She'll prance around the house, her croaky voice booming all through-out... happy with much gaiety and lightness in her voice. It's a victory in her eyes. Me, I've always been seen as a useless idiot. She always calls me: weak, gutless, useless, stupid regardless of my achievements. I observed in public she became someone else entirely different. She'd wear these 'masks' out in public, becoming the sweetest and most saccharine person you'd ever meet. On the phone, she was someone else. Then when she'd come back to the household, she'd turn into a venemous viper. Spitting venom about everyone and anyone she'd observe on social media or the T.V. Rarely she'd talk about their abilities, always she'd nit pick their looks. She always had this complex in her, whenever someone went wrong, it was everyone elses' fault. She was the victim. Never can she take responsibility. Her daughter, for one. She never raised, and still doesn't pay her so much attention. It makes me sad. Even when she does pay her attention, it feels unatural and mechanical the way she does it. As if it's rehearsed from what the 'ideal mother is'. It's brief too. When she's done doing those fake queues to quash her guilt, she goes back to herself.

She was insecure about her looks, how she's 'old', how she can't have anymore kids, how she's not in a relationship. Yet, it's funny. She projects all of the very same bullshit onto me. She says I'm a spinster, I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm probably a lesbian, and that I'll never find anyone. I've noticed also, she has this need to prove me wrong on everything and anything. It doesn't matter what it is.

Her last explosion, I suppose came from jealousy. The middle sister. Her and I have been hanging out with one another frequently. I never pushed her to invite me anywhere, but she did so willingly whilst the older sister wasn't. I was told I was more mellow company in comparison. This made her distant towards me, the older sister, and she began treating me differently. She started doing odd things, like smothering the middle sister and raising her voice loudly in the room so that all attention was on her, it as if she was saying 'Oh my god, look at me, I'm so interesting!' After that explosion, on her part, she knew she did wrong in the eyes of everyone of the household. She is now currently trying to act overtly kinder than usual to everyone. I accepted her apology, but whilst doing so I whinced at her. She noticed. For I suppose, for once I saw through her. I spent a whole year, listening to her prattle on about her issues. She was vulnerable towards me. I know her secrets, yet I don't exploit them as she does with mine. Genuinely, I wanted her to be okay. I wanted to help her. But I can't anymore. I just can't.

It's not really the words that hurt me. It's how she says them. She insults with such fire, such hate, and such venom in her voice. As if she contempts your very existence. As if she is disgusted of you. I don't wish to destroy her, or 'cause her any harm. I know she will do that herself. She will destroy herself. I know she will. Her life seems to have this vicious cycle. When that happens though, I don't want to be there. For she is attempting to destroy me.

I just, I don't know. What can I make of this situation. Why does she hate me so much? This isn't a new thing. She's hated me ever since I was six years old. I have a terrible memory of her then I don't want to bring up- I just want to know. What would you do if you were in this situation? I am at a turning point in my life where I've said I won't be like everyone else, shrugging off her behavior. I want to grow as a person. I want to be the best version of myself possible. I just don't think I can be, if I keep forgiving her.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Hi there @Wolfies,

A very warm welcome to the forums! I hope you find this a safe and enjoyable place to share your experiences as I am sure many others are having similar diffulties in their family as well.

It sounds like your sister and yourself have been having some disagreements during the past year which have made you question the person your sister really is and is making you feel differently about her. You seem to care about her and don't wish to retaliate in defence as she has said some horrible things to you, and perhaps there are some underlying issues as to why she is taking out a lot of her anger and frustration on you because you don't retaliate and react.

Have you tried ways of communicating with her in the past so she won't continue being aggressive towards you when at home and calm her down, such as changing the topic off 'bitching about people' to more positive experiences, as this might be triggering her to become nasty?

It also sounds like your sister may benefit from seeing a counsellor or psychologist to discuss her mental health, is she linked in with anyone? Especially dealing with the break up of her relationship recently and being on the verge of suicide.

Most importantly, your mental health! It might be worth booking in an appointment with a GP to see a counsellor to talk through some ways of coping with your sisters nastiness and putting in place some boundaries, so over time she will learn and come to accept that it is not okay to talk to you like that and make you feel bad about yourself and that you won't put up with it anymore. Just because she is your sister doesn't mean you have to put up with her bad behaviours towards you.

It might not be a matter of cutting her out of your life but working on ways you can let her into your life that are more positive and she will need to be accepting of that?

Any other thoughts as to what might help?

Take care,

Lunar

Re: I don't know what to do...

@Wolfies. I'm sorry to hear how much your sister is hurting you with her wirds and how she says them.
She sounds like she is very angry inside & finds the need to take that out on someone & you are in the firing line.
A couple of things I can suggest;
Has she been to see a psychologist or psychiatrist when she had her 'break down'?. I think she needs to see a therapist and work out what is happening in her life and how to make her feel better about herself.
Have you spoken to your parents and uncle about her behavior? I think it would be a goid idea to sit down (without this sister present) & have a really honest talk with them.
Please know that there is nothing wrong with you. You aren't the cause of your sisters behavior. She is just projecting her pain and insecurities onto you. And you are sensitive to these attacks at the moment.
Your gp can refer your sister to a Psychologist. But for her to go - you may need to enlist the help of the whole family.
I wish you all the best. And please remember - you have done nothing wrong.

@utopia

Thank-you kindly for the reply.

She won't see a therapist. We've suggested the idea numerous times and she won't go. She thinks Therapists, or psychologists for that matter (anyone in that vein of a profession) are con artists and quacks and that they don't know anything. She won't admit to having anything wrong with her, it seems. She's been like this all her life, this isn't exactly a new thing. Everyone is at fault when something in her life isn't right. It's kind of frightening thinking about it...

You say something like: "Oh, you tried to hurt yourself..." She'll shrug it off and say: "Everyone does that."

My parents, Uncle, and other sister all know exactly what she's like. The problem is that they accept her behavior, and just say "Oh, that's just the way she is." I took the heat after her recent explosion, with all of them witnessing and no one lecturered her after the assault. We accept it. Because, we believe that's just her personality. I've noticed there's a pattern with my parents when it comes to us. I suppose they are too lenient. On all of us.

For that reason, there is no other measure for me to take, I believe... Which is why I've come to the realization, perhaps I should double down on my own defenses so that I may defend myself against her verbal enslaughts. I am going to be living with her for a good remainder of my early 20s, which is why I figure if I cannot change her/ improve her. I need to learn how to develop inner-confidence in order to defend myself. I look to those I admire, and notice they have something in common: They all genuinely don't care about what other people think, and don't take themselves seriously. I wish I could do the very same.

Thank-you for your kind words. It's just hard sometimes, I guess... growing up with her, it's hard not to believe half the things she says as truth. I spent the whole night crying, for hours and hours. I couldn't stop. I suppose, at this time in my life, my fragility is somewhat associated to her constant belitting through my life. She was always there, and when those negative voices in my head crop up... they sound oddly like her.

@Former-Member

Thank-you for the reply, and the kind words.

We've been having disagreements all my life. Looking back, it has dawned on me that there is not a single year where we haven't gotten into some kind of argument verging on explosion. She seems unstable, and has always seemed that way. When it comes to me, she saves her most venemous retaliation. Me, being the youngest... I suppose that's why.

No, I don't retaliate too often to the negativity she spits out. Doing so would 'cause friction, and my family... (all of us living under the same roof) Have told me to just deal with it, and don't retaliate. When she says these things, I give a nervous laugh or just agree... pretending that it doesn't hurt me. It does. My Dad told me "Someone's got to be the hero." Despite this, I sure don't feel like one.

Changing the topic to positive experiences? Many times, I've tried doing so. She'd tell me to get my head out of my ass, and that real life is worse than that. She'd tell me that I don't know anything about life, or love... Often poking me with "Oh, you think you're some kind of psychologist."

I searched up a term not so long ago, 'Toxic People'. She seems to fit that term like a glove. She is quite toxic, being around her tires me.

We have suggested that she visit a psychologist, or get help. She refuses, citing them as useless and con-artists. She believes no one understands her, and that she is 'special' in some kind of way. She has this habit of taking many photographs of herself, to garner attention. I had to sit down and deal with her asking me numerous times "Which photo is the best?", "Do you think this looks good?" I would tell her, I don't care... and she'd tell me "You're just jealous because you're the ugly one out of the family." She'd say this with such venom, as if I was dirt under her feet. That hurts, and thinking about something like that makes me well up.

I do see a counsellor, only once a month. It helps a lot, certainly. I would have harmed myself or done worse if I hadn't been visiting her. I am certain. When you're around someone like that for a good majority of your life, it's as if her insults become your way of life. She says you're ugly, useless, stupid and you feel as if there's no point in going on. If you are born into this earth with such values... of feeling worthless, then why would you deserve to live? Visiting a counsellor, and having my Father as a confidante has helped me tremendously. She isn't suicidal anymore, because she lives with us now and we're supporting her. I don't want to put up with her behavior anymore, that's the truth. I try to stick up for myself, she attacks the shit out of me and it just ends up making me vulnerable. It proves her point: I am weak, and she can step on my anytime she wishes with no repercussions.

Truth be, Lunar. I don't want to let her in my life anymore. She has a deeply seeded hatred of me, and I'm not sure where that spurns from. Which is why, I figure. I need to work on myself, and build my defenses. The problem, I guess is that I don't know how to.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Hi @Wolfies,

I can imagine you feeling hurt and bewildered as to why your sister treats you with such contempt when you obviously care deeply for her and are trying to support her - that is such a hard situation to be in.

It seems to be having a huge effect on you, leaving you in tears and hearing negative voices in your head. Like @Former-Member, I wanted to check whether you have support for yourself? Talking to someone about what's going on could be a good opportunity to figure out how to set boundaries and take care of yourself.

I'm glad you've joined the Forums for some support. There are also services that can offer more intensive support. headspace is a free service for young people aged 12-25 (you mentioned you are in your early 20s) who are going through a tough time, including facing challenges in their family and other relationships and with their mood. You can to talk to a counsellor over the phone (1800 650 890), online or in person. Do you think this might be helpful for you?

Take care,

Shimmer

Re: I don't know what to do...

@woolfies. yes she does sound toxic. Hard to do when living in the same house, but can you avoid her as much as it's possible to do.
When she says something negative and mean about you - don't agree - this just trains your brain to keep believing her. Instead, when she speaks this way to you - literally walk out of the room. Walk out of the house if you need to & just breathe some air.
And when your dad says "someone has to be the hero" - tell him he's the parent - it's HIS job.
Keep talking to your therapist. And keep chatting here any time you like.

Re: I don't know what to do...

@utopia

She is, right now she's in bad mood. You can feel the frustration coming off of her.

I have though about doing this actually, walking out of the room when she says stuff like this. It seems as if to me, it gives her what she wants which is me gone... but then I think, does she want me gone? Part of me doesn't think so. Part of me thinks she enjoys me staying there and enduring her insults. I have thought about staring at her blankly whenever she'd say something unsavory, and just saying "Oh really?" in the most uninterested voice possible, and then walking out of the room. I don't know if this would work, do you think it would? The problem is that I show too much emotion on my face, and I have to train myself. I wear my heart on my sleeve, a lot of the time, and I suppose she exploits this.

She hates my Dad's guts, so he can't be the hero. Any advice he gives, she won't listen. She hates him, because I think he and I have a bond that she and him can't possibly have. Which is why she always says things like: "You baby her too much." and "you're a spoilt brat."

Thanks for your kind words, it really does help.

Re: I don't know what to do...

@Shimmer

Thank-you for your kind words. It is quite hard. I have to find coping mechanisms and ways to deal with it, which is quite hard. I decided to come to this forum in order to read/learn some strategies or advice people could give to cope with her ways. I believe, now that I am becoming older I need to learn how to defend myself and find strength. Growing up, I have always had this need and desire to please people so that they may like me. I don't want to be like this anymore. Feeling sorry for myself, and believing her words.

I do visit Headspace already and it helps tremendously. I may speak to someone online, also when the hours are open to do so.

Re: I don't know what to do...

@woolfes. You can always try walking out of the room without responding - just turn away (she won't see your expression) - shoulders back and walk out. You could try it for a week and see how it goes.
I've never had to deal with this situation - so I'm just guessing - but she probably likes you staying in the room - as she feels more in control or more powerful.
