Sisters having relapse while on antidepressants

Sisters having relapse while on antidepressants

Hi I’m after some advice on my 55y sisters meds. She had 3weeks in mental health unit October 2022 and 5x ECTs. She came out almost back to “normal”. She has been specific medication before bed [edited by moderator].
The last week she has started to slip back into a depressive/anxious state. She is getting very vague an not able to make decisions. Her work has stood her down due to H&S worries.
My question is how can she be relapsing while on here meds? She drinks *vodkas a day (So she tells me). Would alcohol affect the meds so much as not to be working at all?

Re: Sisters having relapse while on antidepressants

hey @Sister2 ,

I can see you care for you sister very much.

I was only reading a book the other day about alcohol. It said NO amount of alcohol is good for the body because it is a depressant. It sends your body out of equilibrium so it has to work twice as hard to get back to normal functioning.

From your post, do you think it is an issue with the meds not working, or do you think the anxiety/depression and inability to make a decision a result of drinking (or drinking too much in itself)? Remember, alcohol is a depressant so depressive feelings do come with it.

Anyway, psych meds and alcohol are normally not a good mix. I know it says on my meds NOT to have it with alcohol. It clearly states this as a warning. Obviously, it has unwanted side effects which may include meds ‘not working’?

What do you think?

Re: Sisters having relapse while on antidepressants

@Sister2 Hi, alcohol definitely won’t be helping but some people are also med resistant which means meds won’t work for them or won’t work very well for them. She might also need to try different meds or a combination for it to work it can be very complicated.

Thanks for your reply.
I’m thinking it’s the alcohol that might be affecting how her meds work, but I’m not to sure. I was hoping to get a few people here that might have experienced it first hand.
I have mentioned to her a few times that she shouldn’t be drinking on her meds. She says “it’s only a couple”.

@Sister2 I don’t drink personally so can’t really speak from experience but I do have a family member who drinks and it makes them more depressed it really is complicated and could be more than one thing at play but recovery takes time and it has ups and downs so maybe just give her more time to figure out what works for her.

Hi sorry to hear about. your sister. Yes most definitely alcohol would affect the meds she's on and may not work as effectively. Also alcohol can also cause someone to be more depressed. Maybe her Gp can look at her meds and adjust as necessary However any meds I feel will not work if at all if your sister is mixing meds and alcohol

Re: Sisters having relapse while on antidepressants

I also agree with your comment in relation to meds and alcohol yes most definitely alcohol is a depressant and the more one drinks the more depressant one can get and this becomes dangerous if someone was to mix meds with alcohol as they may not realise how much alcohol they have actually consumed prior to/or after taking their meds. Meds will not work if someone consumes alcohol. My question would be if you want to get better, and can make that decision clearly for yourself then take that step and do not drink alcohol
