sorry this is going to be long...
I have gone no contact with my family as things blew up on Christmas Eve and I was sick of being abused and manipulated.
I have been living with my mum for the past 8 months as I had nowhere else to go and wasnt functional enough to live out of home. The problem was that my mum lives in a one bedroom apartment so I didn't have my own bedroom - we had 2 single beds in the one room.
This wouldn't have been as bad as it was if she wasn't so unhealthy for me to be around. She has no self soothing skills and blows up at small things. She would berate me for decisions I've made or how I spend my money (I'm 27 years old). She would constantly project her insecurities onto me and be extremely negative about anything good that happened to me (for eg I have a crush on a guy at my work and instead of being excited for me she just tells me how he will reject me because she's a "realist"). She gets defensive when I try to communicate my boundaries with her. She honestly behaves like a child and I am constantly on edge because I don't know if she will have some kind of emotional outburst that will trigger me into dissociation.
Being around her was so draining so I stayed with my friends most weekends because I have good friends in my life who know about my situation and history.
I had told my mum that I was not going to my family Christmas because my family do not respect my gender and pronouns (I am transgender and use they/them pronouns). She got really upset and started crying, saying how I need to give the family more time to get used to it but I told her firmly that I wouldn't because it has already been 2 years since I came out. I was instead going to go to my friend's Christmas with her family.
As Christmas came closer I felt more anxious. Had to have another talk with mum over dinner where I had to explain very simply why I didn't want to be around family as there are other reasons other than my gender why I dont want to be around them - for eg they say racist stuff and it makes me uncomfortable as I'm mixed race.
My friend whose Christmas I was going to initially said she'll pick me up on Christmas day, but on Christmas Eve night she asked if she could pick me up after I had spent time with mum as we were going to have a Christmas dinner and spend time together. I asked Mum if that was okay but she got really upset and started crying. She said to tell my friend to come pick me up now because she doesn't feel like having dinner anymore. I was getting angry because of her reaction so I got up and grabbed my backpack and said I need to leave because I don't want to be treated like this anymore.
I called my friend and she immediately got in her car to come get me. She convinced me that I should just pack up my belongings and get out because all my friends and my therapist have been wanting me to move out for months. So I went back up to the apartment, with my friend still on the phone cos she knew I was in a vulnerable headspace. When I got out of the elevator my grandma was there waiting for me (long story but my grandparents live 2 doors down from my mums apartment).
She went on to say how awful I am to my mum and how I always play the victim, how I "play up" my autism (I was diagnosed a few months ago, been a life changing diagnosis), how I act like a child and that I need to get out of mums apartment by the new year. my friend was still on the phone to me when this was happening.
This obviously really triggered me, because I already think I am awful and started to spiral into thinking this was my fault but thankfully my friend kept me grounded. I packed up all my stuff and got out.
I blocked my families phone numbers and social medias even though it hurts. I keep feeling so numb, and suddenly I will start crying. I am grieving so much and I feel so alone and I can't help but feel like this was my fault and that I am as bad as my family say I am...
