Bipolar confusion.

Bipolar confusion.

Hi, I have lived with a 'supposed' diagnosis of bipolar 1 since my early twenties, I am quite old now. I say 'supposed' because so often I doubt it when in the high phase of bipolar 1 and experiencing delusions of who I think I am. Strangely in my latter years I manage to hide that pretty well from others and get on with life in spite of it. So I guess I do have it, but right now I am going through a "really trying to accept it phase" I hate having it and I don't want to admit to it as I have received so much shaming from people who should have known better and then there is my own personal embarrassment on top of all that; I just feel so useless, at times and right now, confused and struggling to make sense of quite a few things. Many people do affirm me and the various talents I try to use to help others and yes, I guess I have achieve a few things. Also I have even been involved in a bit of voluntary work after retiring because I undertook training in CPE and was picked up by my church to assist in visiting the sick in the hospitals. Yes, I do still take mood stabilizing tablets but early in the piece I became allergic to Lithium so besides an occasional bit of psychotherapy when things are really bad I just try to wing it ie ignore it, maybe that is pride. My husband knows about my condition but he has emotional issues himself so we don't always help each other as much as we should/could. I have been a regular church attending Christian all these years despite the temporary setbacks due to short hospitalizations, loss of jobs, and having to start over and over again in the face of very public shame and embarrassment. (Probably largely self-imposed nevertheless it is so very hard). But my faith and trust in Jesus and the teachings of the Bible are real, and very important to me, they are the powerful thread that has got me through so many ups and downs without choosing to, you know ... . Many reading this may not believe in God and that is okay He doesn't force anyone to believe and neither am I trying to do so. I started this post here tonight because right now I am struggling with confusion, not about my belief in God and His love and compassion for people but about not being able to trust my town houghts 🤕 when in a ⬆️ or in a ⬇️ mood. 😢

Wishing anyone who has been brave/kind enough to read this epistle to the end a very Happy Christmas and a New Year filled with better things for us all. 🌲 🤗

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Hello @Elin well done on your achievements over the years. I'm bipolar too and can understand the self-doubt, and not always trusting our own judgement. For me the self-doubt has been worst when getting over a setback, before I've refound my equanimity. On the other hand confusion and misinterpreting things has sometimes been a sign for me that I'm not doing so well and need to look after myself.

Your faith sounds like a real strength. I don't know what CPE is but I admire your voluntary work, and living your values.

Take care

Dimity

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Peace be with you @Elin .

I kind of see what you mean. When I think of Bipolar I in high phases, questioning the mania seems like something that happens after you hit the ceiling. Then again, maybe that kind of nuance happens all the time. I'm really not sure.

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Thanks for your reply. I am not quite sure either @wellwellwellnez

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Awe, thank you so much for your encouragement @Dimity. Tru self doubt is worst "when getting over a setback," for me too.
Sorry, I should have included that CPE stands for Clinical Pastoral Education. It enables one to do voluntary Chaplaincy work. It astounds me now, that they let me do the course and that I was picked up. But because I had been a trained nurse and also because when I had to be hospitalized to get meds rebalanced I received some horribly rough treatment at the hands of some psych nurse and it made me want to help people who were suffering, not what the cause. I should have joined this forum a long time ago but I didn't want to be labelled. Thanks again for touching base with me. Cheers.

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Sorry for some missing words and typos, hope you can make sense of it.

Re: Bipolar confusion.

It sounds as though you have a lot to offer @Elin , and the CPE has recognised that and helped you grow even further.

There's a thread here called Let`s talk about Bipolar with some lovely people including @Appleblossom and @Shaz51 and there's also one for Christian chat - lots of social threads and interest groups.

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Hi... People who live well with bipolar are indistinguishable from anyone else, so try not to get down about bipolar. There's heaps of really high functioning people with bipolar, they're just invisible. My psychiatrist has a patient who's a doctor with bipolar.

I'm a bit concerned about you being allergic to lithium... As it's often in our water! But often people use the word allergic when they mean intolerant. There are heaps of other meds... I've literally tried well over a dozen for bipolar, lithium is only one. I get an allergic reaction is disconcerting, but there are literally dozens of meds you can try. I'd encourage you to find a psychiatrist you can have a strong relationship with and together to develop stability. I'm pro meds for managing bipolar, but it's true some people can manage without maintenance medication. I'd encourage you to have rescue meds on hand though, and to be really savvy about self monitoring and really cluey about your mood states. Without the support of a good psychiatrist it can be really hard to manage bipolar, all the best to stay strong.

Re: Bipolar confusion.

Hi @AuntJobiska

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have been stable for sometime now and it’s a strange but positive experience just getting used to the fact that what’s left over is just you. I have a wonderful psychiatrist and that has made a world of difference.

Thinking of you.
