Welcome and getting started

I’m a new member MX5

I’ve lived with depression for most of my life and it’s been under good control. 2 yrs ago I had a flair up of depression and anxiety which I eventually worked through with support from my husband. 2 wks ago I had another flair up of my mental health but this time I seem to be experiencing huge amounts of anxiety that seems related to childhood trauma. Any suggestions for practical ways to deal with this anxiety and worry would be welcome. Im a Tai chi instructor so I use this every day but I feel some days it’s hard to calm down.

Welcome @MX5 ❤️ I hope you find us welcoming and supportive here 😊 What are some other things you've tried before?

I thought I'd tag a few community guides to say hello and offer their thoughts to you @Faith-and-Hope @Judi9877 @NatureLover @Shaz51 @ShiningStar @maddison @pinklollipop15

I thought I'd share a few things from the community so far

Hello @MX5

Welcome to the forums 😊

I have had depression all my adult life. The anxiety was very bad, & I have needed prescription medications, anti depressants to help get me through.

I feel very silly giving advice to a Tai Chi instructor! I feel like you are many steps in front of me... Well done!

I can offer my observations from reading your post - I am unsure if it will be relevant to you. You seem to have excellent insight about where this current anxiety is stemming from.

My thoughts are that your mind is possibly working through old trauma - I think that could be a good thing?

My thoughts are that this is a phase for you. If you can hold out (if you agree & feel comfortable) I think it will definately pass.

My only other practical suggestion - maybe to help you short term would be try calming supplements?

If you are not comfortable, perhaps herbal teas?

Good quality herbal teas throughout the day can be very beneficial.

Again, all the self care tips that @Former-Member linked are so important, if you are not already doing them!

Sorry, I couldn't be more help.

Wishing you well.

What kind of calming supplements would you recommend?

Hi @MX5

How are you going today?

I can't recommend anything! I can share things I have learnt, that work for me.

My 'go to's' are tryptophan & NAC & magnesium.

I buy them from iherb. You might have local herbal health food store that stocks them.

I personally find better results with NAC than I do with sedative prescription medications.

You will have to research it - I think it helps brain to produce glutathione & reduce stress.

Only my experience - all our brains are different. Taurine is another supplement that can potentially be very helpful for anxiety.

If you wanted to go to local chemist, they have lots of things to try. St John's wort is very good (the best brand is Perika it's overseas - local brands are fine too) St John's wort basically interacts with every single medication. In general it causes other medications to be broken down in the liver more quickly, thus not getting full effects. Again, you will have to research & perhaps not a good choice if on other meds.

I have never tried Ashwagandha. Many good reviews.

I also take magnesium chelate daily. (Chelate seems better - nature's way)

Please talk to your GP. This is only limited info I have learnt from the internet. My GP is aware of my supplements.

Talk with the pharmacist - they are very knowledgeable about drug interactions.
