Medication vs no medication

Medication vs no medication

I admire people who can maintain their mental health without drugs. For me despite medication and using cbt, dbt, therapy, I can still at times battle with my mental health. No I don't like the side effects but the alternative is much worse. I want to stay sane for my daughter & avoid yet more hospitalisations ans constant instability.
There's so much misunderstanding about MI in the community thinking it is cured by taking drugs and no consideration to side effects.
What has been your experience? There's a lot of judgement about "non-compliance" but can you understand why people would stop their meds? Have you tried it? Or are you like me with break through symptoms even on meds and couldn't imagine taking away that help?

Re: Medication vs no medication

This is a very important discussion. Thank you so much for starting this thread, @2angels...

Firstly, can I start by saying please please please don't fall into the trap of feeling weak about currently (or for ever) needing psych drugs to battle the demons inherent in serious mental health disorders such as bipolar...

This is a measurement thing, in my opinion. We all do it so often in our lives... measure... how bad is this, how good is this?

Measurement is an important thing in staying alive... our ancestors survived to pass their DNA onto us because they measured... how fast is that sabre-toothed tiger... how deep is that water I am about to dive into? How much water and food do I have...

Where measurement becomes counter-productive is in the world of our thoughts...

We start to measure how bad off we are... how bad is my depression or anxiety or (hypo)mania? How does it compare to another? Why aren't I better, measured against what I believe should be my current state of existence?

All of this measuring...

A very important thing about measuring is this - you cannot measure something against something else if there is no common measurement unit...

Things like distance... easy... metres, miles, yards, light years, whatever... there are standard agreed-upon units of measurement...

Pain... mental health...

These have no standard units of measurement, for they are about as subjective, individual and personal as it gets in life...

So... why do we try to measure our apples against someone else's oranges, I wonder...

Hahaha... this is what it is like to be insane...

And most humans are... just about all of us are insane...

Us peeps with diagnosed mental health issues? Well, we just know that we've got issues... most everyone else thinks things are just fine most of the time... but... we know the truth... things aren't just fine most of the time...

But we find ways to deal with life and our place in it... sometimes that involves medication, sometimes it involves talk therapy, sometimes it involves going to a quiet spot and staring at something soothing like the waves of the ocean for a while...

Measuring what it takes to get through our own individual lives, or measuring what is actually wrong with us... that has some use, but it is not the most important thing there is...

Sometimes, we need to put down the ruler, and instead pick up whatever is needed to make our own individual lives better in this moment...

I am diagnosed bipolar 2, but odds are that I am bipolar 1 (undiagnosed) because I have not had a psychotic break or manic episode... but I've had lots of rapid cycling and mixed episodes, which by the mental health manuals suggests I am bipolar 1...

Just more measurement, really...

I am me... learning to survive me is my aim in life... learning to be a positive instead of a negative in other people's lives, that is also my aim in life... which kind of requires more measurement along the way... hahaha...

Trapped with a tape measure in our hands, we inch along this journey of our lives...

I have never been on psych meds... that does not invalidate your own personal experiences, pain, suffering, needs, motivations and life choices...

Having said that... I drink alcohol and smoke weed in order to do the job of mood and energy stabilisation that psych meds would do...

So far, the side effects have been very manageable, and the collateral damage has been minimal...

But if that ever changed for the worse because of my changing condition, I would take out my tape measure, get a feel for what was what, and apply whatever measures needed to survive being me...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to you... thanks again for starting this very important conversation... 🙂

Thank you for your insights. Yes it does take a bit to stop the comparison with others. Being a perfectionist in the past it's hard to give the yardstick the heave-ho. As you say we are all different individuals with out own paths and need to get meaning out of our lives. Your words have made that clearer. Nameste

Re: Medication vs no medication

Gaaah!!!

Hahaha...

Yes... the burden of perfectionism...

[Raises hand guiltily]

Me too...

Oh my... the havoc that has caused in my life and in the lives of those around me...

Perfectionism... stupid bloody concept, isn't it? Hahaha...

Sending a plethora of hugs and happy vibes your way @2angels 🙂

I have to be careful how I communicate when I am heading higher through hypomania's heights...

I can get very intense and direct, and that can trigger people...

Let me know if I'm getting too preachy or in your face... hahaha...

Hugs... 🙂

Hahaha...

And here's the real trap of perfectionism... we try to perfect our way to deal with perfectionism...

Giggle... it's good to laugh at ourselves sometimes... it stops us taking our selves too seriously...

Re: Medication vs no medication

Hi @Shaz51. I was taking meds for over 20 years no monitoring. About 2 years ago, I stopped suddenly. All I have noticed was insomnia, which is slowly getting better. Since stopping the meds I have noticed a change for the better. I still suffer slight depression, but I was experiencing severe hallucinations while taking the meds. They have ceased completely. The depression is manageable mainly because of my living arrangements. I was living with my (now) ex, since leaving him, the depression has become manageable. I mainly get 'down' when I'm tired or physically unwell. I don't feel alone as I did when I was with him. The meds I was taking made no difference to my depression as it was not through any sort of brain imbalance as was first thought. When outside influences cause hurt and anxiety, meds help control the depression somewhat. However, removing yourself from the influences that hurt, works better. My bf and his support helped me to see what was happening. Toxicity within a family unit is hard to cope with if it's your blood family. When it's in-laws with help from your spouse, their child it's unreal. I had never experienced such toxicity and was totally out of my depth. My ex FIL is the original chauvinist, my ex MIL a true narcissist. Didn't I score well on the Richter scale.

Re: Medication vs no medication

@pip @Shaz51 yes I was on anti-depressants for years and they did not help. I think I was undiagnosed for bipolar, so when I eventually went to hospital with severe psychosis I eventually had a better diagnosis and treatment.

@Silenus, I love the way you describe bin details..always makes me smile..your a funny guy, but yep I agree on your acceptance of the insanity as sanity, because essentially insanity is every where!
@2angels, I think you speak so clearly of your condition. You should be proud, it's a real strength.

Re: Medication vs no medication

Hi @Silenus

You are right - we are here today because our ancestors passed the problem solving gene to us - they measured and thought and considered different things - and the past was kept alive in their minds and which came first - memory or language? My idea is that they evolved together

So they remembered who went out in bad weather and took whatever with them and whether they returned or not - and copied what had worked - and here we are

And now we have our mental problems - maths - language - and still measuring and problem solving - what works? What doesn't?

I would love to go into your post further but not tonight - but we are not weaker or stronger because we deal with things differently - those people who went off in bad weather - who knows whose ancestors they are - maybe yours - maybe mine - possibly all of us

It's in our genes to problem-solve too

Had a bad day @Silenus

Catch you later

Decadian
