Somniphobia

Somniphobia

Hello I'm Sam and I am 18. As of the past month my Somniphobia has been disgustingly bad. To the point where I've been gagging and nearly throwing up from the pure anxiety that the thought of sleep provokes in me. I'm purely wondering if anyone else has this intense fear of letting go of reality and control when you sleep. It really bothers me to the point where my sleep is so fragmented and bad that I'm sleeping like a couple hours at a time when I do sleep. Today I got between 5-6 hours which honestly is fine for me I can do fine on that sleep, obviously not as well as my 7-8 hours but I certainly don't feel terrible. The only issue is for that 5-6 hours, I woke up 3 times; after my first hour of sleep, then after 2, then after 3. Then on the 4th try to go back to sleep I got really bad anxiety about the whole sleep thing so I decided I'd get up and maybe, just maybe, feeling a bit more sleepy than usual I'll have better luck getting some good sleep tonight instead. I'd say if someone asked me to explain why I feared sleep it would be the following; I hate letting go of wakefulness and going into a semi-unconscious state randomly that you're never really aware of, what I mean by that is how like you're awake and then boom, suddenly you're asleep and you never realise it until you randomly decide to wake up. Also the fact that it is everyday and for 7-8 hours of a day, it really scares me. I don't know whether this stems from my Thanatophobia or PTSD from when my dad passed when I was young, or even from the surgery I had as a kid. But one thing for sure is that I can't go on living with a fear of sleep, which is an activity which is vital to wellbeing and quality of life. I really want to be able to enjoy the act of going to sleep and not be almost throwing up at the thought of it. There was definitely a period where sleep didnt bother me at all and I did enjoy it, but I think as I matured and my thinking changed it has gotten way worse than it should have ever gotten. In that regards it kind of happens in like phases, I'll be fine for months about it then randomly it sneaks up and overwhelms me for a while before calming down again. Obviously I'd like it to never be an issue, instead being something I can comfortably do without having to go to war with my brain to try and just let go and sleep. Does anyone have any tips or quite literally anything that I can try or do to cope with it? My psychologist tells me to do mindfulness activities to take my mind off it, but it doesn't really work because the thought and fear is still there, kind of like I need to somehow change my perception of sleep and re-train the way it perceives it, but I don't know how to do that or if it would even work in the first place. She also recommended EMDR but I don't really know how any of that kinda stuff works, not that I'm against it, I just don't know if it would be effective in eliminating the fear that I get from the act and thought of going to sleep. If you did read this I appreciate it immensely and if you also respond that would be great, thanks for your time out of your day 🙂

Have you told your psychologist this?

Also, about EMDR, I've heard a lot of good things about it...might be worth a try?

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Re: Somniphobia

@NatureLover thanks for the response means a lot.
I have told my psychologist this, along with my GP and my mum.
I will probably look into trying EMDR, just a tad bit sceptical of whether or not it will actually work in my case. But one thing is I'm certainly not against the idea, as long as it gets rid of this annoying fear then I'm all for it.

Re: Somniphobia

Hi @Samm I am sad to read about your sleep phobia. I watch a youtube mental health educator who did a video about not wanting to go to sleep. Her name is Lauren and she lives with schizoaffective disorder like me. Her youtube videos are able to be found by searching "living well with schizophrenia". I can't remember how she copes with her dislike for sleeping but I hope the video helps you. I am unsure if I can post a link but tag my username Patchworks if you want the direct video link.

I relate to you a bit as my PTSD means I have nightmares and very unpleasant dreams. Even on a good night, I dream a lot and vivid dreams I remember. Sometimes I dread sleep but not to the extent that you describe. I wish you all the best finding what helps, Patchworks

Re: Somniphobia

Hey thanks for the sentiment and my deepest apologies for your circumstances. I can imagine having nightmares is quite the trouble when trying to sleep. I personally don't fear sleep because of dreams, I do find dreams unsettling and weird though but yeah I don't fear them.

@Samm Well done for this, as reaching out can be hard.
