art therapy

hi everyone i was recently watching a show on abc iview called space 22 which is about art therapy for people with mood disorders, anxiety and trauma. it made me wonder how many people have had the chance to do art therapy? have you guys done it? what did you think? i have done a little art therapy and it was somewhat helpful i would be interested in seeing what an actual program would be like.

Re: art therapy

Hey @Eden1919

I've done small amounts of art therapy when an inpatient. It was good!

I'll have to try and remember to watch this show 🙂

Re: art therapy

@Eden1919 @StuF I've done art therapy over several inpatient stays as well. It was good. My biggest project was glazed ceramic windchimes and I went back to the clinic after I was discharged to collect them. I enjoyed trying painting and a number of crafts. I always meant to follow up beaded jewellery making. Go for it if you have the chance, it could be fun and you'll meet new people. And yes, I'd say it was therapeutic for me.

Re: art therapy

Hi @Eden1919 I have never done a specific art therapy course but do use art as my own self-care ...and along the way as personal therapy. I was recently involved in doing a body map to show my relationship to my own mental health. That was a very therapeutic and worthwhile project as a long the way I needed to think about where I had been with regards to my MH, where I am now and where I would like to go. ...and I got to use art as the basis for visualising that - it was n awesome project to be part of.

Re: art therapy

@StuF yes you should watch the show it was quite good but might be triggering for some so only watch it if you are in a good frame of mind.

@Dimity yes my art therapy experiences have been inpatient, i think it is hard to find art therapy in the community which is a shame because i think it could potentially be more useful in the community where there is access to more materials and such to do it.

@Zoe7 yeah i do art by myself as a kind of therapeutic activity it can help you process a lot of feelings which is nice.
