Trauma from previous jobs - Need advise

Trauma from previous jobs - Need advise

Hi, I'm faced with many old ruminations of traumatic job situations - horrible bosses, their abusive behaviour, narcissistic manipulation, struggling with anxiety and depression and so scared to go to HR or even use employee assistance programs.

Their words, treatment and behaviour keeps coming back to me and I don't know what to do. It's stopping me from moving on and living my life. I can still feel a lot of anger for those people and companies.

I feel so used, misunderstood and mistreated. I had so much burden on me that no one was willing to help with even when I asked. I crippled under the pressure and burnt out badly..

It's been 2 years and my health is much better now after quitting. I'm dealing with the mental health effects still and feel very anxious to start looking for any other jobs.

I'm feeling very depressed and hopeless and don't know what to do. I was bullied and manipulated and it's really hurt my self-esteem coz I didn't stand up to it or get out soon enough. I let them do this to me type of a story. There's a lot of guilt, shame and embarassment..

I just want to feel healthy again and have faith that there are good companies and people out there. It feels catastrophic like everyone's bullies in the corporate sector.

I feel strength-less to take on the challenges ahead of me and I'm still in my 30s and need to save up for my retirement etc.

Hey @Shasan

Firstly, I want to validate your feelings. I get it I really do. Health anxiety is my specialty!!! 🤣 Following closely is financial anxiety. I went through a stage of not working for some years. I had four kids so it wasn't like I was doing nothing. BUT there is that extreme pressure to 'do it all'. I thought I must be lazy or something for not being able to find a job. Anyways, those days are behind me but I remember it well.

Next, there are absolutely jobs that you can get doing 2 days a week. Many of my jobs were 2-3 days.

I'm thinking of you in your struggles! Besides Glassdoor I'm actually not sure of other sites that review organisations. I imagine you could do a google though and that might give you some insights. If you find another review site, would love to know what it is.

Sending you warm wishes

Hanami

Hey @Shasan ,

Thank you for the tag. I'm sorry this week hasn't been the best. Sounds quite draining actually.

All the best with your job search.

I have found that doing a web search about a company to find reviews e.g. company reviews, helps a lot.

Also, if think it is quite difficult to find jobs on part time. I know it's easier to begin full time and then drop down to part time. Usually this is because it takes a while to learn their systems and ways of working.

However, it's not impossible. Just keep looking.

Looking forward to hearing how you go,

tyme

Re: Trauma from previous jobs - Need advise

Hi @Shasan,

Nice to see you in the forums. I hope your back is okay now.

All the best on your job search - just remember to have faith in your abilities and remind yourself of that you are very capable. The feelings you have had in past were not founded in your abilities but based on how you were treated by some people in your workplace.

I think if you go to into an interview with the mindset (like you said) `a job is just a job' then you will be a lot more relaxed and be more your authentic self. I think it is when we start to get into how heads that a job is the be all and end it actually makes going into interviews more difficult.

When I start to overthink my mind goes down a rabbit hole - it's very easy to get into that head space. When this happens to me I slowly count to ten, breathe and remind myself that my thoughts are just thoughts and they are not my reality. I read once that about 80% of the things we worry about don't happen - I always try to remember that when I start to think negatively.

Your comment about grounding and relaxing self imagery is a great idea. Another idea some people like is a vision board - where you might put pictures or write on a board of things you will like to come true in your life. It can be a good visual reminder of what we are striving for.

I think once you start applying for jobs and going to interviews you will start building your confidence up again. It will only take one good job that will remind you how capable and worthy you are as an employee. I have no doubt you are a great employee - you just have to find your confidence again.

Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much @FloatingFeather @tyme @hanami

Your words are nectar!!!! I'm doing better this week mood wise, mainly because I'm not trying to do it all like @hanami suggested... It's a HUGEEEE relief. I've given myself permission to not be "work productive" until I figure out some of the other heath stuff that's going on coz that's making everything else more stressful.

I really appreciate the Google review suggestions and for the reassurance that it's possible to find 2-3 day jobs... @hanami I wish there was a DM kind of service on here because I'd love to know which industry this is in but it might be private info for a public forum.... Is there any other way to connect with peer support workers on sane forum?

@FloatingFeather You're a very wise, caring and encouraging friend, I'm so very blessed to have access to your words. I crave words of affirmation so I'm soaking up each word deeply, just wanted you to how much I value and appreciate it ❤️❤️ you seem to have an almost accurate perspective of what this stage is like, in a very real way - what a gift! Thank you so much.

So, I'll get back to thinking about a job in about 2-3 weeks time... This week is for health admin and health stuff, next week for business admin, the week after for job + ongoing studies.... If there are no other curve balls 😹😹😹

Thank you so so much for your unconditional support and letting me be stable/unstable as I climb this up and down mountain - it feels good to have friends who are cheering on 📣📣🙏

Naw @Shasan , your words warm my heart! I'm so glad you're finding support and strength here among your forum friends.

If you want to know about peer work specifically there is a peer network support group on facebook that is amazing. I get loads of info there about what's going on in mental health and people post about available jobs. Let me know if that's what you were specifically wanting to know and if not I'll see if I can help otherwise.

Again, so so happy you're feeling better this week. ❤️
