I hate the way I'm behaving

I hate the way I'm behaving

Hi there, first time poster, sorry if this is the wrong forum or anything

I've had depression for maybe five or so years now (I'm 25) and have been on and off in therapy and with medications and all that. I admit that I haven't done nearly as much as I should to help myself with it.

Anyway, recently, it's been getting a bit worse, and this has made me worse to be around. Specifically, for my girlfriend. I find myself engaging in horrendously manipulative behaviour towards her. When we fight, which is infrequent, I threaten suicide and self harm and I do it in a manner that implies that it's somehow on her. I know when I'm doing this, I feel myself doing it and I f*cking loathe myself for being abhorrent enough to hurt her like that when all she wants to do is help. I have to stop, for her sake and mine, but when I get in that mindstate there's little I can do to stop myself from being a terrible person to her. If I ever hurt her I just twist it back onto me, if I ever worry that I'm losing her I threaten self harm so she'll stay. I need to stop this as fast as I possibly can. If anyone has any advice, or links, or anything to help me stop being such a monster I would appreciate it to no end.

Thanks

Hi Rodav,

When I read your post, I could sense a feeling of guilt and remorse for your behaviour towards your girlfriend. It's great that you have insight and awareness of your own actions and that you're taking responsibility for your behaviour. This is an important starting place to make changes. I know you mentioned that you've been doing therapy on and off to treat depression, it may also be helpful to try counselling to address these particular behaviours. Relationships are hard work. The emotional investment that we place on them can bring issues to light that we may not be aware of, particularly around intimacy.

Relationships Australia is a service that may be able to provide counselling and support to both you and your girlfriend (provided she wants to go). On their website, they also have a heap of resources about creating healthy relationships. Mensline also provide support to men (an women) about issues that men can experience in relationships. From your girlfriend's perspective, you may find this thread from the carers forums useful too. Feel contribute to it as well if you'd like to hear views from carers as well.

Has anyone else got any advice for Rodav? @kato @Loopy @Alessandra1992 have you got any wise words for Rodav?

Re: I hate the way I'm behaving

@Rodav your post echoes deeply with me this is exactly what I found myself doing until the day my wife had me arrested an intervention order and no communication since.... I have lost everything for not getting help sooner....
now I am not going to say this will happen or should happen my thoughts and hindsight come in handy.....
go to your gp if you have one it is going to be hard believe me..... if you can explain to your gp what us happening and that you need help the dr can/should point you in the right direction ie. Start getting tou some help from a psychologist start putting in place the chain of help
this is not easy if your like me and don't like seeing yourself this way it is a process but the first step you've already taken and that is seeking help from this forum.
if you already have a psychologist explain to them exactly what is going on
it is the quickest way to start I hope it helps
if you need to you can talk here as well alot of the members know bits and pieces to help the puzzle
I am sorry if this comes across the wrong way
I am going through the rough end of leaving it too long.
and hope that you can start the ball rolling quicker then me.
be honest with the specialist don't hide the more they know the more they can hopefully help

Re: I hate the way I'm behaving

often its ourselves that we hate so we hurt the ones we love. we cant believe they would love us or be so stupid as to stick around. so we just keep pushing and pushing looking for that point where they will break? anyway I sense a bit if self loathing in your comment not sure if yhat is the case? sorry if on wrong track.
