Find ways of getting it out of your head. Expressing it .. writing it .. drawing it .. understanding it.

For a while now many people recognise that the body heart and mind are linked.

Re: What does it mean ? Its all in your head

Hi @lw88,

I find people who are ignorant about mental illness tend to come out with trite comments like "it's all in your head'. Sometimes it's easier to ignore these people and talk directly to the professionals who deal with mental health issues every day. Your G.P, a trained psychologist/therapist, social worker or psych nurse would have experience with mental illness and would never come out with flippant comments that can be dismissive and very upsetting.

If you are talking to someone who you really care about and who you feel you would like to understand what you are going through- then perhaps offer them some pamphlets about mental illness to read? Or maybe direct them to a website, like Sane.

Perhaps you could list your symptoms and how those symptoms effect your everyday life? For example, "I have insomnia and I don't get enough sleep. Then I feel exhausted the next day and so I can't concentrate." Or "I worry about everything all day long. This prevents me from enjoying time with family and friends and stops me from getting things done. I often feel short of breath, have heart palpitations and get light-headed." These are just examples of things that have actually happened to me. Your experiences could be quite different.

Being quite specific about what you are going through can help people to understand where you are coming from.

But, also, sometimes it's better for you to only deal with those people who do offer you kindness and support and steer away from those who are less supportive, for now. It can be very exhausting trying to justify yourself all the time.

Hi @lw88,

I'm one of the moderators on the Forums, I just wanted to pop by and say welcome and congratulations on your first post 🙂

I think trying to explain mental illness to others who have no professional background or personal experience is one of the toughest things to do. If you want to share some more about your experiences, and what you'd like to get out of the Forums.. We'd love to hear from you.

Otherwise just know that we are always here for support if you need.

If you feel up to it, please feel free to have a look at this thread called Night Shift or this one called The Beer Garden. It's where most of the regular members go to chat about day-to-day things.

@lw88. Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm glad you felt safe enough here to talk with us.
I agree with what @Sahara has said. Brochures and information booklets on your condition can be helpful in educating those around you. Are you talking family, friends work colleagues?
Breaking your illness into bite size pieces like @Sahara suggested, will make it easier for ithers to understand.
I wush you well
