Assignment triggering psychotic thoughts

Assignment triggering psychotic thoughts

So, I'm writing a major assignment the day before it's due (yes, yes, I do hate myself) and I'm finding that the question is triggering some old, leftover thought processes I had during my psychosis - the 'everything's connected' thoughts.

I don't think I'm experiencing a breakdown so much as just having fallen into that old brain groove. It is annoying, though, as my essay deliberately asks me to 'compare and contrast' different challenges in the field of study. So I'm a little unsure whether what I'm doing is a valid comparison or a psychotic comparison at any given moment, which is making me second-guess myself something wicked.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

@Gwynn

I've not had experience with trying to do an assignment on it, but plenty with the thoughts! Which of course can be and are triggered by various things.

Umm, not a lot to offer, sorry. But I hope you can somehow push through it and get the assignment done 🙂

Hi @Gwynn

I have a similar issue whereby certain things trigger my memories of delusions and they kinda try to hook me in again. It's not me being unwell but more remembering my illness symptoms. I tend to reality check a lot which can help. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions. Good luck with your assignment!

Re: Assignment triggering psychotic thoughts

Hi there @Gwynn . I hope all is going well with your assignment! From a personal experience of studying in the past, I’ve found certain topics to be triggering for me and my mental health so the best advice I can give to you is to acknowledge your thoughts and feelings and try and make time to work in them once the assignment is over. Even a simple little thing like jotting the thoughts down on a piece of paper and then putting them aside to deal with later can often help as it means that you aren’t ignoring them- just dealing with the ideas at a later stage. I don’t think it’s a relapse or anything to be too concerned about- more like your brain playing tricks on you and wanting your attention when you have more important things to work on such as your assignment. I find that my brain tends to play games on me when I’m stressed and I thinks it does that to act as a distraction technique to try and get me to deal with that instead of what I should be focusing on which is of course not the right thing to do as I’ve found out. I think personally this issue is trying to distract and delay you and I know you are a strong person to be able to acknowledge and respond to it in your own special way such as asking for advice here on the forums. Maybe take some time out to do a mindfulness exercise if time allows and just sit with the thoughts and experience yet not actively do anything about it/them may help.

I wish you all the best with your assignment! Please don’t let this episode distract you from completing your task at hand. You can do this and you will pass it! Good luck forumite friend🍀!

Re: Assignment triggering psychotic thoughts

Thanks everyone. It's so good to know that I can always come here and say what's on my mind and someone will get it, or else they'll say they're thinking of me in my self-inflicted pain.

I think I'm starting to get over the hump of 'I have no idea what I'm talking about' to 'Maybe I have some idea of how this all fits together'. Current word count: 1,300/2000 words. (It took me long enough!!!)

I did the maths and I only need to get 15 marks in this assignment to pass the whole subject. Granted, 15 marks isn't the absolute goal, but it is comforting to know that as long as I put something in with my name on the top, I'm in it to win it. (haha, I'm kidding, I've made my dad read my draft and he is making some very positive noises about it).

In addition to talking to you guys about it, I told my dad and he was concerned but seemed to get that it was more of an upsetting memory and a resulting fear than an actually present delusion. I am getting some good practice with that 'return to the present moment' muscle that my psych talks about.

Hi there once again!
I’m so glad you’re taking positive steps with this episode of yours @Gwynn
Remember that a Pass is still a Pass and that’s the thing that counts. Just do your best and remember that you are travelling with extra passengers in your study car - mental illness being the extra passengers as I was told when I was at uni and first got diagnosed with mental illness.

Take care!
