Made to feel silly for trying to prevent worsening symptoms

Made to feel silly for trying to prevent worsening symptoms

It's been a very stressful 24 hours. I can see warning signs of relapse (schizophrenia) of my friend of nearly 20 years, whom I live with.

In the last 10 days, he has slept around 3. His behaviour is manic & since this morning has become verbally aggressive/abusive. I have been in contact with his case worker over this period. She has made no effort to assess him, and is mostly uninvolved/absent in his care, compared to previous nurses he has had.

I have been worried about him for last fortnight. There are plenty of times where he is kind & coherent. I have noticed a decline, enough that my sleep has been affected by the stress.

This morning, after he had a delusion that I had stolen a note that he had written & started yelling, swearing at me while I was still in bed, I decided we were at crisis point & reached out to mental health health triage. Eventually, they arranged ITT to come out and assess him. I spoke with them and explained everything. I tried to explain that he needed more support than I, or 15 mins with his nurse could give. I said he was at beginning of relapse & I believed he needed short time in hospital to prevent him becoming sicker & resulting in likely needing longer stay.

Long story short. They refused to take him. His bags were packed (an indication in my mind, that he knew he needed help) The basic reasoning I was given was that he is not sick enough yet. They would prefer to "keep him in the community as long as possible." ??? I tried to insist that I knew he needed help, and the male nurse turned his back on me.

They are arranging to come back tonight and give him sleeping medication. They also stated that his usual nurse will follow up tomorrow. It feels an inadequate response. I know my friend, I know he won't ask for help, I know he needs more intense support at the moment.

I don't know, maybe it was the right decision by professionals. Then again, If they had seen some of behaviour I have seen in last few days, there would be no question he would be hospitalised.

They make their assessment after speaking to him for 20 mins, when he's semi ok state & disregard everything I've said. When I see him suffering with his mental health condition, I feel totally helpless. It makes me sad to see someone I care about, having to suffer.

He has become so unwell in the past that recovery has been a long & difficult. I want to try and prevent that for him. He knew and accepted what I was doing. He wasn't full of hate and anger like other times, where I had second guessed my intuition & delayed getting him help, and the illness had progressed to completely unmanageable state to where he would be completely incoherent.

The assessment nurse, for unknown reason, dismissed my intentions. Offered band aid care imo & had little interest in trying to understand or care for myself & friend.

Thanks for reading. Feel disillusioned by the whole process. I've literally been told today that I must wait for my friend to be really suffering before bothering to get him support.

Thankyou @Appleblossom ,

You echoed my thoughts exactly. The uncertainty of correct measures to implement at certain times weighs on me. I think you have also underlined why support is so important. I am lacking this at the moment, with his his cw being inadequate, and also his Mum who had recently relocated to a retirement village, a distance away from us. Everything has fallen on to me.

If I didn't have the support of SANE members at this time, I don't know where I would be. When I read kind messages from other members, who really 'get it's I am overwhelmed with gratitude & my mind feels peace and healing. Thanks💜🙂

@tyme

Thankyou for your amazing support. Was able to get some good rest, as well as friend.

Things seem calmer, feel unsure how they will pan out over the coming days.

We are both disappointed to find out this morning from ITT, that his cw is again absent today (we were told yesterday that she would see him today) We both agree now, that it is imperative he be assigned new cw. Unsure how to navigate this process, hopefully it can be worked out, asap.💗 Thankyou @tyme

@maddison hi maddison. There is a lot of co-vid in hospital units at the moment which could be one reason why they didnt want to accept your friend right now. .... has he been taking his medication?

Hi @Bunniekins

Thanks so much for replying! It is so nice to have members support on here.

You made an excellent point that I hadn't even considered. My head has been a bit overwhelmed!

Yes, he is currently on CTO due to difficulties in staying consistent with taking meds. He has fortnightly depot through community health service. It seems to be effective treatment most of the time. Currently, we have been experiencing a few different stresses in short space of time. I suspect he is having difficulty processing, & adapting to changes, & that is why he is becoming unwell.

Thankfully, nurses have been coming by each day to check in on him. I'm also hopeful that he can access more intensive care in the community. It is difficult balancing act to know what is best for another person! Hoping things will calm down for us & will wait and see how next few days unfold. Thankyou💜

@maddison

How is your housemate?

Have 'services' come up with anything yet?

In our situation, the cw phoned late yesterday to see how son was going, so that was something. His court was delayed for a month. Being grateful for small mercies.

Hi @Appleblossom

Nice to hear from you! Yes, it is a case of being grateful for small mercies!💗 Glad to hear it has worked out for your son in that way

We spent the morning at his local public mental health Centre. Usual cw AWOL again (had to leave work due to a cough..ahem...).

He had lovely social worker sit with him instead, during appointment with psychiatrist. I wrote some "case notes" for psychiatrist, to help give them better overall view & my concerns that things were not stable as of yet.

The appt. Had been scheduled for 11am. He didn't get in until 12pm. Apparently psychiatrist had to make urgent house call so was running late.

I watched, as nurse told another patient that their cw was not in today... Maybe tomorrow?? (I actually thought of you)

I believe there are severe staff shortages everywhere now, & will probably only get worse over winter as covid cases rise.

I feel positive, that my friend was able to at least get professional support today, and also has taken some of the burden off me. I am anticipating that as carers, we will likely have greater demands put on us over the coming months, with system overwhelmed I think being able to be mentally prepared for this is also small mercy🤍💕🤍

Thankyou for checking in with me. I'm grateful to be able to write it all out. 💐

@maddison

Will the social worker be able to put a few things in place?

Not totally buying into 'the shortages' theme though.

They have had 40 years to put in place better community supports, that would have been less expensive than goin with the medical model. Now the whinging about it being a stressed system is falling on my deaf ears, while I still try and be polite about it all ... as needed ... wear weary sigh..

At the court yesterday there were 5 staff at the general enquiries desk but I was the only one in the queue. Maybe they were doing other work but I doubt they were that busy.

My own session with pdoc seemed to go well, seems he respects me. I am old enough to have some financial security so the $55 gap fee is not as big an issue as it used to be.

I just worked inside from gardening out in my court and a newish neighbour ridiculed my son saying he is crazier than I.

So thats how it goes ....
