In which way do you suggest,Sane could help improve the treatment of Mentally Ill in Public Hospitals?

In which way do you suggest,Sane could help improve the treatment of Mentally Ill in Public Hospitals?

From my research, and things I have seen in the past, stigma is still very present from Hospital staff and/or Ambulance workers towards people with Mental Illnesses, particularly Hospitals in more suburban areas outside of the main cities.
They are still treated very poorly and spoken to disrespectfully, and bystanders will say nothing out of fear of retribution or fear of ridicule.
I don't think any of the recent attempts to end stigma has "touched" these Hospitals at all as they are oblivious that these anti stigma campaigns even exist.
For example, these staff members are more likely to watch forty on TV as opposed to watching Abc Mental As programme or the Q and A programme about depression etc.

What ideas do you have that Sane could do to help expose and address the stigmatising/discrimatory attitudes that still exists at these suburban Public Hospitals?

My idea is that Sane could create a detailed survey questionnaire that would ask people who have been patients of these hospitals to rate out of 1-5 how respectfully they were treated, what tone they were talked to,what their experience was etc...
But Sane should give these surveys out in the hospitals grounds and not just online so they could reach people's views who may otherwise not go online or have access to or cognitive ability to use the internet.

That way, organisations like Sane would have a greater idea into what problems still exist, and in what areas, and be able to create a plan to counter them because sometimes I feel the only people that are tuned into "anti stigma campaigns" are people that either have a mental illness, their families or people that already believe mentally ill shouldn't be stigmatised against, but the "perpertrators" themselves are actually tuned out,if this makes sense.

@ivana

I think you mentioned that the review process was open to the public .. is there any way do you think that I could find out about the exdoctor who I was told in a therapy session .. had an alleged enquiry into him .. I cant see a record from a casual internet search... you seem much more tech savvy.

I am curious about the grounds and types of complaints he had so I can see what particular triggers or consequences I experienced from seeing him ... he is dead now .. so its just a follow up for my own personal development.

the other shrink with an enquiry told me directly about his enquiry. It made him into an anti establishment hero in my eyes .. as he claims it was cos he sacked 2 violent workers and he wasnt having that in his hospital but the that the union then fought him ... for wrongful dismissal .. then he went into private practise, where I saw him.

Perhaps he became used to being a cult figure in the field .. there were a few back then ... which might be a reason for some of the swing to conservatism in the medical establishment now.

All I know is his year of death (1990s) .. funny his obits dont mention it but gloss over him as an innovative cult figure, great at giving attention etc .. but not to me ...he had already made it by then I guess. I didnt know that, I went to him cos he was in walking distance ... i couldnt afford many individual sessions they were significantly out of pocket .. maybe that was the issue ,,, I got in trouble once for asking somebody how to use the medicare sliding gadget ... which was left in kitchen for us to use rather than going through secretary .. very efficient ... now I think about it.. another time I got the rap but another person was doing the wrong thing. hmmmm

I was told early 90s.

@ivana Thank you VERY MUCH for taking the trouble to look and post those links.

I am finding it healing just to go through them and think ... that I am a person and a patient with rights ... it doesnt really matter if I find the old cases ... I can let go ... it is history and some research does dead end ...but still glad I shared and that you cared.

Re: In which way do you suggest,Sane could help improve the treatment of Mentally Ill in Public Hospitals?

Hi. yes, you are living on another planet. Although you work for the mental health service you are apparently unaware that people with mental illnesses have no rights under the mental health act and can be put in solitary confinement and tied up (nb. there would be a public outcry if criminal offenders were treated this way) - well, now you know.

Re: In which way do you suggest,Sane could help improve the treatment of Mentally Ill in Public Hospitals?

Hi Acacia, i'm not sure how anyone could have a good experience in a mental health unit - they are barbarous places. Being severely oppressed by the government with violence and stalking in the community, etc, for having a disability is hardly just 'having a rough time with the mental health system'.

by the way, your 'subject line' for the whole topic says 'the mentally ill'. We are people with mental illnesses, not 'the mentally ill'. Sane is meant to be anti-discrimination and should not be using slanderous terms to describe people with mental illnesses. People with cancer are not ' the cancerous'. Sorry to be belligerant but Sane should get things like this right.

I agree that some better work is done in Iceland with a trauma informed and less meds approach.
