Where I'm at

Where I'm at

Hi everyone, just an update and a couple of questions from me!

I am very well and living a good life. I practice gratitude and I have a job and a house. I have been taking my medication for the longest stint yet, which I attribute to my success. My last psychosis was the worst yet and I will never stop taking my medication because of that. Being medicated has been a game changer for my schizophrenia and I even feel like I am a normal person now.

I am totally leaning into being healthy all the time! So much so that I am seeing periods of my illness as times that I was sick instead of seeing them as personal failures. It's phenomenal! I actually look back, and I can say to myself, 'gosh I was unwell' rather than see it as something personally wrong with me. Given, these times did set me back significantly in terms of career and finances etc. It makes me sad that I have this disability, but I know taking my medication and doing things like exercise and not drinking alcohol has helped me recover dramatically.

I even have a long term boyfriend. Unbelievable! I never imagined I'd find someone so stable and lovely. The only problem is that I haven't told him about my illness. And I feel like it's been so long dating that I might not be able to... He knows I have mental illness but not what. I have gotten feedback from some family and friends who have said "It's none of his business" and others who have said that he has probably googled that tablets I take day and night. My thoughts are that if I stay healthy and stable, I shouldn't need to disclose, at least until we move in together or take the next step in our relationship. I am happy where we're at anyhow. I'll get to it what I come to it, but if anyone has any experiences they'd like to share, please add it to this thread.

One other thing I wanted to bring up was the job thing. I have recently applied for another job with an employer who spouts they are equal opportunity and want to employ people with a disability. So I did it. I ticked the box about disability. I said I didn't need any adjustments at work. I wonder has anyone had any positive experiences with this? Or the opposite.

I wonder if they employee me (if my application is good enough) because I ticked the box. I wonder whether they will ask me what my disability is. I REALLY do not want to disclose... All is to be revealed. I'll keep the forum updated, wish me luck!

Re: Where I'm at

@Rosie I disclosed at a previous job and Igot the job, due to some internal reorganization I didn’t get the job, but I was stressing about the commute there but they said to keep in touch regardless. I’m working else where now where I haven’t disclosed and am planning not to disclose I too have schizophrenia (disorganised) and am taking every day as it comes. Wishing you well with whatever it is your embarking on and hope everything fits your needs

Fantastic to hear that you’re going so well generally and being kind to your past self when you think about those periods of illness. 😊 I’ve recently applied for an internship via a disability group, and they’ve told me that when asking for reasonable adjustments, I don’t even have to say why I need something. For example, I could say I need access to a computer, and no one needs to know it’s because my handwriting is illegible due to my disability. It’s quite a change from what I’ve experienced in the past, but I’m not arguing!! Best of luck in getting the role!

Hi @Rosie I like that u are getting support from family and friends Re making these decisions and that so,e advised u not to disclose to Ur bf.

I probably agree ...Def would think it's ok to take time.

I didn't tell my employer anything and continue to hide from them my mental health struggle

I top a, scared they won't handle it properly

I think it's ok to be really vague, my friend also advised me this way, like if I miss work because I'm in a psychiatric hospital, I just say I'm recovering in hospital without giving specifics.

It is hard for me as I like being up front, but I guess we learn to self protect, as honestly some ppl are family judgemental regarding mental health.
