Violence from Ex Partner/Recovery and the Journey of Having to Start Over Again

Violence from Ex Partner/Recovery and the Journey of Having to Start Over Again

hello Everyone its Lost Angel, where do I Begin? I've known a man or thought I knew him for about a year, we met online ,everything was casual and fun at first, over time I let down my guard ,my Boundaries, we had a lot of good times and equally a lot of bad times, situation was confusing to say the least, there was manipulation on his part as well as gas lighting, I dont like to use the word victim as I tend to blame myself for a lot by habit, I met him when I was in the thick of depression Diagnosis, to cut a long story short we began seeing more and more of each other ,he moved into my house in recent months as he was virtually homeless ,I was trying to help him although I knew I was taking a huge risk,in the month he spent staying with me at first things where good except for when we argued ect , we had alot of nice times together, fun times, laughter, watching movies ect but then gradually that unravelled and faded into something I wasnt at all prepared for ,we had the usual issues that most couples have at first except we where not a couple it was a non comitted situation,to get to the point things escalated first with verbal critisism and it didnt help matters that we both felt external as well as internal preasure from the situation as well,he frquently accused me of lieing to him, theres alot more but yeah at times I felt he cared but other times there was a nasty side, which became more noticaeable as time went on,things went from bad to worse to the point there ended up being two violent incidents ,I escaped and reported to the police, and sheltered for safety with family ,now hes been remanded in custody and I had had to go through, medical exams and police statement the next thing will be court I guess whats on my mind is should I drop the charges cause crazily enough I fell in love with him or do I just tell all ,in the hopes that nonone judges or thinks that Im the one lieing and try to have some form of closure, the heart says one thing and my mind says another

@LostAngel Your decision here either way should not be about anyone else but you. What others think/do not think/believe/ do not believe is not your burden to bare. What is important is you feel safe, supported and in control of whatever decision you make. Unfortunately loving someone does not mean that they will not break your trust or your spirit nor will they change their behaviour because of that. Weigh up what is right for you and maybe anyone else that comes across this man in the future - in my experience a leopard does not change his spots no matter how much we love them.

I'm glad you got out and found some safety. So glad.

You're definitely not the first person to be weighing up your conundrums.

There's interventions that can bring the Men's Referral Service into the picture. They talk to men at risk of violent controlling/behaviour and run behaviour change programs and other things. They're people-based but also out for results. I'm not an expert but they are. Generally it takes incidents (or indications of an incident) to occur and be legally recorded for them to get involved (but they work the prevention side rather then the prosecution side). A lot of what they do is get people into a position where they can meaningfully address what's goin' on. Something to consider.

thanks everyone moving forward as best I can at this stage he has been charged with harming me on two seperate occasions aswell as being remanded in custody ,there will be a court date sometime in the near future,I dont in any way feel good about having to report him,but I felt it was the right choice at the time either that or letting the abuse continue, but I couldnt stand it to continue the way it was going, the situation was dangerous, the scars have since healed physically but my mind is still going over things,I seem to need to run or keep moving constantly to distract from what happend although I am starting to add more self care such as hot cups of tea, listening to Insight timer app meditations, talking to family when needed, regaining a sense of independance, its sad though that it came to this,I wish both him and I had made better choices ,I dont enjoy the thought of him being locked up and yet he very much enjoyed to see me in pain at his hands ,as the detective told me I may miss him but he needs consiquinces, now Im alone or having to get used to living my life on my own but thats safer than having him present and abusing me whenever he wished ,my family has taken this situation hard I feel bad for what they are now going through as a result of what I went through, I also feel empathy for him still and for his imediate family who have no idea that he is currently in prison
