Deciding where to live when we retire

Deciding where to live when we retire

I am trying to make plans with my husband, but he just does want to give me feedback on when he plans to retire or where we will reside when we do retire. I am already semi-retired and I have wanted to move away to a quieter place for quite some time. When I talk to him, he gets a little annoyed and we cannot agree on where we will eventually live. Currently he wants to stay where we are and he thinks it is not necessary to plan ahead. I think it is important to have plans and I feel that my dream of retiring and moving to a quieter location is just being crushed. A few of our friends have moved away and they are very happy with their more peaceful location.

Re: Deciding where to live when we retire

Good Evening @Elizabeth2020 ,

Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us.

Moving, at the best of times, is a lot of work. Despite the potential benefits, for some people, even THINKING about moving is too much work!

I know this because I'm one of those people. I don't make big changes unless my situation forces me into it. The 'safety' of the same old thing is a comfort.

It sounds like your husband is similar. The day he's uprooted, he won't look back - what do you think?

😉 tyme

Re: Deciding where to live when we retire

Obviously this is a major life decision @Elizabeth2020

Does your H even want to retire? I am finding it really hard to make a decision about retirement right now and I’m tempted to just walk away and live in a Winnebago for the rest of my life.

Welcome to the forums!!

But we at least need to agree on the when and where to retire. The location is very important.

Hi @Elizabeth2020

I hope your weekend is going ok. Is it wet where you are?

Have you thought of suggesting a couple of days away near where you’d like to live? Maybe h would like that and he would consider options.

A forum tip, if you type @ then a person’s user name they will see your response.

Take care ☔️🙂

Re: Deciding where to live when we retire

Hi @Elizabeth2020 ,

Retirement is one of the biggest decisions we make in life and making plans about where to live, how much money we will need and what we will do with our time can be very daunting. Perhaps you could start by thinking about ‘must’ haves for where you eventually end up. My H and I had 3 criteria before we made a final decision….good hospital, water nearby ( sea, river or lake), and close to trains so we could travel. We eventually found somewhere we liked. Best of luck.

Re: Deciding where to live when we retire

Ever think about buying an onsite caravan in a sea side caravan park.. You can spend so many days a year in the van and rest at home where you live.. If you get sick of it you resell the site and do something else or go some where else....jay2

Interesting. Your 3 criteria are very similar to mine. Water & trains are also important to me.
