Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Hey all! I decided to kick start a sweet little space for us to gather and talk ADHD!!

You can read the Topic Tuesday discussion (at which I was a guest) here.

Some of my go to resources:

ADDitude - Online Magazine/resource for all things ADHD

Three Pillars - My preference for explaining the experience of ADHD without relying on the DSM-V (scroll to bottom and work your way up the list)

How to ADHD - A Youtube channel with tips, tricks, strategies, how to guides, life hacks, you name it

Russel Barkley - a world renowned psychiatrist who has been at the forefront of research into ADHD, its neurochemical markers, and its impacts on daily experience, particularly in regards to executive dysfunction. The link is to an hour-long video aimed at parents of kids with ADHD. He also has one for adults with ADHD (with actionable tips!).

This is a space to talk about your experiences, struggles, strategies, and just an all-round safe spot to be a big pile of chaotic energy right here!!

Hey @Jynx @tyme

Here are some of my tips.

What everyone has shared has been interesting.

- Visual reminders/communication
My partner and I set up a life admin system, when something needs to be done or has been done that’s noteworthy (even not for the other person), we write in our book that lives at the end of our kitchen bench (or you could use the fridge but that’s covered in kids stuff for us) it’s mostly to help me.
It means that instead of constantly sending texts, as soon as i remember something I write it in the book, it could be “I fed the dog 5:30pm” “tablet taken at 7am” “appointment tomorrow” etc
It’s for both her and me, cause sometimes I can’t remember what I did 5 mins ago. I also need help remembering stuff, I can be told things 5 times sometimes it just doesn’t register. We also tried a shared notes program on our phones but the attention deficit part of me meant that I read the notes and no information went into my head or I just ignored the notification, but hey you gotta try things, this has taken probably 2 years to get right. Mostly on my part. If it’s not used right it doesn’t work and is not worth it at all. It’s taken a lot of work and reminding but its paid off because I use it as a reminder for myself. This is mostly for me, I’m the only one with adhd in this house,

- Being competley organised the night before where possible, when your exhausted it seems like it just won’t work but it means a majority of tasks are done before bed, no matter what. It’s really hard work to start with, and sometimes it’s late nights Things like lunches made, clothes in a pile. That’s kind of a non negotiable. I am a classic “I’ll get up early and do it” and never do so this has just become the routine now. It makes the mornings a bit easier when all you have to do is get everyone dressed, fed and go. I have been known to be up at 12am making lunch and drying clothes but they are things that just don’t happen in the morning. Im known to lose track of time pretty easily and get side tracked. In the mornings I lose track of time real easily.
- Noise cancelling headphones, I put these on sometkmes when my house is overwhelming me and I’m feeling over stimulated, my family is slowly learning that means I need some space, sometimes I put these on while I’m cooking and just tune out
- Having a little safe space I can go to in those moments I feel like I cant deal with the sensory overwhelm (for me it’s the garage, sometimes just outside)
-Designated time alone, we started this “offline time” thing a while ago, between the kids going to bed and sometime later in the evening my partner and I both have our own time and then at a certain time of night we turn phones off etc and be together, it’s not set in stone, but I found I was struggling with the constant stimulation of work (or being home with kids all day) to then going home to house chores and loud family to then no wind down time, but then wanting to still be with her in the night, and also feeling bad about wanting to be alone, and this was a way that worked for me to get that personal time and not sacrifice relationship time. I realised only recently that back to back stuff contributes to the overwhelm and over stimulation sometimes.
- ALARMS!
- SO MANY ALARMS, people always ask if my phone is going off, no it’s just another one of my alarms going off lol 😂

Also just be kind to yourself it takes a lot of hard work to find out how your brain works and best functions, i still don’t know much about mine but I’m trying to learn

Also if your house is a mess and it’s overwhelming you just put a blanket over the piles of mess, your object permanence will make you forget its there and you can live in relative peace for a bit

I like the "throw a blanket over the mess" strategy @ArraDreaming . OR... shove everything in the cupboard and slam it shut?
