Injury and pain affecting mental health

Injury and pain affecting mental health

Almost a year ago i acquired a severe injury that has resulted in chronic severe pain that affects my daily living. I have spent countless hours on tests to confirm a rare diagnosis, treatments and specialist appointments and drs. my savings have all been drained and all my spare money gets put towards more treatments or appointments.

My entire life has been flipped upside down. ive needed to give up some jobs and give up some of the best opportunities ive ever been given and things ive worked towards for years. basically a few 'this is what ive been waiting for, this is what ive trained for' moments and it has been soul destroying. every aspect of my life has changed, ive lost friends, family dont understand or even want to try to understand- the often just think of themselves because it affects my ability to do things for them now. even walking is a struggle. sleep usually evades me because im in pain or cant get comfortable, cant hardly fit in shoes and my clothes had to go up a size because my leg swells so much sometimes that i struggle to fit in anything except for stretchy shorts or pants like lounge pj pants.

it was a very unfortunate accident and really only an accident but the way that its panned out, is very upsetting and frustrating. its a very lonely place to be in right now with no friends, no family support or cares and specialists that dont really know what to do. it gets hard hearing ' im sorry but im not sure what else to do with your condition at this point'

I'm wondering if you are on Facebook and could search for chronic pain support groups there...or else google them? I mean, online groups, although I suppose there might also be an in-person one in your area? You could search for your rare diagnosis support groups maybe...

I assume groups like this might offer support and practical tips for living with chronic intense pain...also ease the loneliness of your condition.

Sending wishes for enough support for you, also for your sleep, coping and easing of the constant severe pain. 💙

Dear @outlander

It has been a very long haul for you. Constantly pushing yourself to manage for yourself and your family. Sorry that the understanding is not there from them. I am glad you started a new thread to bring your situation to the fore. At your stage of life things should have opened up more, so it must be hard to compare your circumstances with others of the same age. You have been forced to be more mature. I remember what that felt like when I was young. Hearing you about the drain on finances. You deserve support. I hope you do find some ... on social media or in a chance meeting with someone irl.

We always love having you here at Sane.

Gentle Hugs

Apple

Re: Injury and pain affecting mental health

I totally understand your plight. I've often just wished that somehow somebody would make a miracle happen and solve the problems for me, but that doesn't happen, and we just gotta try to continue on living each day, trying new things to remain hopeful. One of the things i rarely hear discussed is how pain can and does affect a persons mental status. When i'm pain-free i feel more hopeful, more peaceful and i make better decisions. But i've found it very difficult to obtain medications to relieve pain fully. I don't know what to suggest other than seeing a specialist in the area and trying medicines that relieve pain as a means towards improving your mental health. If after multiple attempts the doctors won't help you, maybe you need to seek alternative means.

Have you got someone to talk to about this stuff? If you speak to the mental health services you might find they'll help you find a carer. Even if you don't need the physical help, they can help with emotional support, listening, talking. Some support people just do their job, whilst others genuinely want to help. Just talking it out can help. and you can be honest with them and say, look just having somebody to talk to once a week would be beneficial in dealing with some of the problems.

You can try to remain positive and attempt to believe that dealing with your problem is your lot in life. Everybody has problems and you can try and use it for good, some people can even manage to make a good thing out of pain, but thats asking a lot. I think there should be a far greater emphasis on allowing people access to medication that will help. We need better options than painkillers, we need politicians and doctors to realise that the proper medications need to be available to patients, and you shouldn't have to see a specialist to get it.
