21 year old son with mental health problems

21 year old son with mental health problems

Hi, I am new to this forum and have joined because I am living with an adult child who has an undiagnosed mental disorder. He is 21 and not working or learning. He worked in a supermarket and saved over $10K. Since he left that job he has smoked dope, gambled most of the money, isolated himself from friends and basically allowed his dark shadows to control his life. Just recently he agreed to come to the GP with me and was prescribed anti-depressants and advised to get of dope as quickly as possible. He was with HeadSpace but felt that he was not getting anything out of the sessions so stopped going. He has agreed to see psychologist in our local area. I am very grateful for the services available to him.

I just don't understand his negativity. He is a young, good looking person with a terrible attitude to life. I woke up one night in a cold sweat thinking that something terrible must have happened to him that I didn't know about and asked him but he said 'no'. He dropped out of a TAFE course that he started when he left school because he basically couldn't handle adult education and taking responsibility for himself. I broached the idea that he may be suffering with ADD and he agreed telling me that he'd been researching why he felt the way he did.... lost, lonely, sad, a gumby (his words) and that ADD came up as a reason. He was seeing a kinesiologist over the course of a year while he was working and ultimately she told me that his belief system mirrors that of an alcoholic or drug addict meaning that his problems are caused by circumstances that are outside of his control and that he is a victim. That is certainly how he behaves.

He is self aware and is often researching why he feels like he does and has flagged the idea that he is a narcissist and may have an Avoidant personality disorder. His father and I are keeping a close eye on him and supporting him to the extent that he has a safe home, good food, parents who love him and will support him emotionally but it's hard. It's hard seeing him lay in bed all day, complain about life and not try. I have taken away the x-box controllers; I take away any dope or bongs that I find. I read the books with him that the psychologist has recommended and read other books from the library.

The thing he does that drives me mad is agree to do something and then at the last minute tell me that he didn't agree to it at all (avoidance.....or control?) I don't know. This weekend we booked to go away for 3 nights which he agreed to and now tonight he says he won't come. It's upsetting because he has a younger brother who wants him to come. My husband has said that if he doesn't come then none of us will go. I doubt that he will feel any sort of guilt about that. In fact I know he'll just say that it's not his problem. I imagine you're thinking why we would want to take a 21 year old with us anyway but with the way he is it would be irresponsible to leave him at home alone.

I have spoken to a few people who have said that 'it's a boy thing and he'll grow out of it'. I really do hope so. I don't know how to motivate someone who is so determined to live like a victim of his fears. I wonder if any of you have any thoughts, experiences or ideas.

Re: 21 year old son with mental health problems

Janine- It's a bit of a long shot but along the lines of "check all the possibilities"...

I've got a slightly older son who tends to be avoidant, and has had times when he's been very socially awkward and withdrawn. He hasn't had the drinking/drugs/gambling problems, although given the chance he will spend a lot of time online playing games. So some similarities, some differences. The starting point for his problems though is neurological. He's intelligent but with areas of specific learning disorder, which is a nightmare in the school system because teachers don't often understand why an obviously smart kid who knows the work well cannot complete a test or essay (and ho boy you treasure the teachers that do "get it"!). The ongoing pressure to do things that he was literally unable to do resulted in fairly serious anxiety.

But the characteristics of the neurological problems are not just learning related. Lack of mental organisation was something that neurological tests showed up as a big problem. There's a whole list of abilities that really blur the line between neurological and psychological function. Being organised is largely a matter of decision and training/self-training. Mental organisation is a function of how well co-ordinated the brain's neurological operations are. Motivation is also both psychological and neurological. Psychologically, it's the will to achieve a goal. Neurologically, it's the ability to move (motivate) through the steps required to complete a task. A person with damaged neurological motivation may need to be talked through how to start "step one" of doing a job, and then they stop dead, unable to process how to move on to "step two" until someone come up and talks them through it, and so on. (Simplistic explanations. I'm informed but not an expert... 😄 )

So what I'm suggesting, is ask a psychiatrist whether sessions with a neuropsychiatrist may be worthwhile to rule out the possibility of a neurological problem underlying the psychological problems. Neuropsychs are expensive and few and far between, but a good psychiatrist should be able to tell you whether there's anything in your son's behaviour and profile that justifies the expense and long wait time.

DEarest @Two

Im catching up on messages here: these are the pionters that you and I probably agree on.

Hope.

Staying there and being You. always acting like you want to.

Mar...... use and other illegal substance use is self medicating is just that it. Self medicating.

I dont know if past illegal substance use ends or not. I never went down that path...I went psychotic badly when I tried Mar......

What I have learnt from mental illness is something that probably everyone here will agree because the people here are teaching me in that:

As soon as someone who suffers times of MI and OTHER unmet needs;

opens their eyes: everything is very confusing. Someone who is standing next to you might be yelling at the or wispering like they are in another country

What do you think?

Re: 21 year old son with mental health problems

Good news!? My son has stopped smoking dope for the past 3 months. His reasonong is a bit wacko but I don't mind. He has decided that when the aliens come they won't take him if he's using drugs!! Whatever works. He is much happeir in himself and is eating properly and looks so much healthier. It's a big hope of mine that his aliens will tell him to clean his room...haha! Mind you, I shouldn't laugh too hard at his ideas, as there are supposedly sane people who believe that there are aliens out there somewhere and scientists are tracking space for signals.

Re: 21 year old son with mental health problems

You are optimistic @Two ...... never thought that my sons would use green and other drugs but they do and have.....I think my oldest has finished but he was 25 and think that it's a journey for him still and this is not talking about whatever else he has done.

I asked my youngest son if he uses green to numb out how he's feelng and he then quit

( for the moment)

It's so hard when the sons are 21....you are really going well if you can stay focused on him.........

Like you @Two

By the way.has anyone seen @Appleblossom
