Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hi @Former-Member
We commenced our diets 3 days ago. Miss Rosie our mini foxy got a treat of a 3 kilometer walk. Beautiful day for it.

Hi there @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51 @BlueBay @Maggie @Whiteknight

Thanks so much for your posts over the past couple of days. And hi also to @Zoe7.

WK - diets? Oh you poor things. Thats tough. I actually need to put weight on, as I lost a lot over the past 12 months or so. Went from a healthy 60kgs to an underweight 50kgs. And my little dog Holly, well she's always been a bit of a lightweight. So we are a little on the opposite side to you. We should be putting some weight on, rather than trying to lose it. Although I think Holly's about right. Every year when I take her for her annual innoculations and vet check they always say she's perfect. And I have to agree. Because she is - in all respects.

How am I? I'm stewing actually, about an article I read in yesterdays newspaper. I cannot believe some of the garbage some people write and supposedly believe. I may write more about it later.

Just wanted to thank you all now for your kind thoughts. I am struggling somewhat these past few days. It would be so easy to just hide under the doona and stay there indefinitely. It feels warm and safe there. Where as outside of there, everything is a battle - hubby, thoughts, life in general.

I hope you are all doing okay. Good on you WK for taking your health and well being seriously by taking control of your general health and your little Miss Rosie's as well. You may have had a good day there, but where I am, its cold wet and windy. Not at all nice. Winter has arrived.

@Former-Member I've done just that today, hid under the doona. Furbaby had an unexpected op yesterday. A cyst came up within hours. I got her into the vet thinking it was a gland. She had a general anaesthetic and it was drained. They will do tests now just in case. It knocked me around. But today, she's back to her old self, a little sore, but that's to be expected.

Im sorry to hear you are struggling is so many ways. Your weight loss is concerning, especially as you are caring for hubby. You need your strength. I'm not one to talk, just concerned.

Have you managed to do some more things for you as the week went on. You made a good start. I expect it's harder than you thought. I'm sending the best wishes across the Tasman. Snow in tassie, but I'm not complaining.💜💛💕💞💗

Hi @Former-Member - I understand those thought of wanting to hide under the doona and stay there indefinitely - feel much the same these days. I haven't been doing great either but trying to take each day as a new day and go from there. Last night was the hardest I have had for a while - just was not coping with 'life' and mostly with my own thoughts - a bit better today but still wanting to hide away

Little Holly is such a gorgeous little dog - it is no wonder she is so special to you - I completely understand having the same feelings with Toby.

Your Swannies won well in the end last night - I am going to watch the Tigers-Essendon match tonight - we play tomorrow.

Warm hugs for you and Holly

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Dear @Maggie - how concerning for you. Poor little Maggie-May. So pleased to hear she is back to herself today. Things for me since Tuesday seems to have turned to custard. Yes harder than it should be. All sorts of reasons or excuses for that.

Snow in Tassie? Nice. I am not complaining about the cold weather either. I love the cooler nights. Feel so much more secure when snuggled up under a nice warm doona. For me summer represents insecurity. But ... I dont appreciate windy weather!

Sending best wishes and warm hugs back across the Tasman to you Maggie. ⛵

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Awww @Zoe7 ... Hugs to you. Really happy that you have Toby to keep you comforted. They really do help, dont they.

Yes I was getting a bit concerned about my Syd Swans last night when they went into half time a point behind the last placed Carlton. But they came good in the third qtr. They dont have a very good home win-loss record this year unfortunately. But they have lots of new young players coming through this year which is great to see.

I am currently watching the Ess/Tigers match too. Expecting a big crowd at the MCG.

Good luck to the Lions tomorrow. And warm hugs to you. Oh ... a pat for Toby too.

Sherry ❤

The tigers look like they have Essendon's measure already tonight - I know it is early but the Bombers look 2 steps behind tonight. I hope it evens up a bit more as the game goes on - I like the Tigers but I want to see a good game as well.

@Former-Member Toby is snuggled next to me - sound asleep and spread out like a fluffy rug lol - he needs a haircut and a bath but it is a bit too cold. It is supposed to be a bit warmer later in the week so I will try to do it then. At the moment I am struggling to get through each day and do anything - I know you know how that feels - so hoping by the end of the week I will have a bit more energy to sort out the little fluffball

Give Holly a huge hug and one for you too

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member - sometimes it is tempting to hide under the doona, especially in this weather. It's cold, windy and wet here too but the rain is much welcomed. I don't like the sound of your weight loss - please be sure to mention it to your GP. Are you eating? Probably stress, but important to check out. You must be feeling really tired and burned out. Sending a gentle hug.

I have visitors over so will be going out somewhere with them today. I will tag you in the other thread soon for an update, there is abit to tell. I hope you are managing some self care plus relaxing on this overcast Sunday (sun is peeping out now and then). Thinking of you and will chat soon ❤️
