Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

If it’s deep @Former-Member, then go to the hospital and get it seem to .... you might need stitches, and a deeper wound has greater risks of infection.

Sorry to hear you are hurt ....

Good evening @Maggie, its just after midnight and I've just come in from outside where I've been gazing at the sky and the stars. Its a lovely evening actually. Holly found herself a frog in a bucket on the deck which had some water in it. So when I went looking for her, there she was with her head deep in the bucket trying to grasp this frog which was swimming around the bottom. It was a bit like that party game kids play, the bobbing apple or something I think it was called? She got it though, clever little girl that she is. Up she came with a smile on her face and a frog carefully placed in her mouth. She let it out on the deck and watching it hop safely away. I wish I knew what she was thinking. I've seen her do that before actually.

Yes its been a big day today. I was at the local hospital at 1pm to meet hubby as the patient transport van turned up to deliver him. Got him admitted and settled into his new hospital room. He is looking so much better than he was even a few days ago, so I'm hoping he wont have to stay too long in hospital before finally being allowed home. He is only having the occasional periods of confusion now, and his mobility is much improved to what it was only a few days ago. He is slowly getting stronger, more balanced and less shaky. All good news.

We also saw the oncologist this afternoon as he wanted to see him immediately he got back to our home town. Although we couldnt discuss actual treatment yet as we still need the staining and BRAF tests to come in before determining the best treatment for him. So we will need to see him again next week.

But yes, oh yes, it is a huge relief that he is no longer down in the City and I dont have to keep returning there. Although it was a long day, as I was up there from 12.30 until a bit after 8pm. Either at the hospital, organising transport to the oncologist, waiting for the apt, organising and booking additional tests like blood and CT scans, etc. But he is nicely settled now and happy in his new room.

Oh thats a bit of a blow Maggie with your counselor being away. Yes I'm sure she has earned a break, but its still tough when it happens aye?

My Mum is doing reasonably well at this stage. Still very tired and I think fairly depressed, which is fairly common after such and operation. Also still having difficulty breathing as there is still some fluid on her lungs from the pneumonia. But regarding the actual mastectomy, all going well and healing nicely.

Thanks for your reassurance that I'm not alone. I tell myself that and sometimes I even start to believe it, but then there are times I know that isnt really true. Support is great and really helps, the likes of you and the other members here make a huge difference to my thinking. But at the end of the day physically there really is just me.

Sherry

For you Maggie - the night sky.

Oh @Former-Member, so sorry to hear that. How far are you from the hospital? I agree with @Faith-and-Hope, have it seen to and then you can stop worrying. Try not to freak out though ... breathe!

Thanks @William1, yes there is an art thread and I have been tagged in it already. Are you an artist as well? Not that I'm saying I am, coz I'm not. But I like to try.
