Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Thanks @Eve7 ... such kind words, from a very kind lady No bubble bath for me tonight, although it sounds nice. Thinking I will get an early night though. I have already taken something to help me sleep, which my psych encouraged. Really want to sleep tonight. Just feel so exhausted right now, and yet sleep just hasnt been happening.

ECT #14 ... well done. Tough for you I know, but you are getting through it, and you are amazing. I read your other update on the other thread.

@NatureLover ... yes self care needs to be a priority right now, something my psych emphasised. Even though my caring duties have been very difficult of late, I need to concentrate just as much on my own care, as I do hubbys. And yes, there is lots to digest from todays psych session. Some strategies I need to work on and put in place, for ongoing safety's sake. It should be a quiet day tomorrow, with no appointments for hubby, so I will be doing a little bit of me time through the day where I can fit it in.

@Former-Member ... thats so true, I always find that. Where a psych session puts everything right back to the fore, and you get in a hyperaroused state once more. It takes time to come down from that. And sessions force you to think and talk about whats happening, and that makes you realise just how real it all is. As explained to NatureLover, I plan to do some self care and self compassion tomorrow. Because yes damn it ... I AM worth it! And thank you for saying that too EOR. You are a very kind and caring person, and I appreciate your support very much.

@Molliex ... aawww ... thank you. I was kinda proud of myself today too. I was open and very honest with my psych today, more so than I usually feel able to be. I hope you made it through your work day without too much physical pain or ongoing mental anguish. Are you also working tomorrow? Please dont push yourself too hard right now.

@Lee82 ... yes I got quite a lot from my session today. Suffering the consequences right now, but I know that will ease over the coming days, and I will then feel better for it. The hug is needed ... thank you. One for you too, because I know today was another tough day for you too.

@Snowie ... love and hugs to you too. So good to hear you are managing okay at home after your hospital discharge. Sounds like a good plan with your maintenance ECT to be once per week for a while now. That sounds manageable. How are all the family .. human and canine?

@Sans911 ... thank you. Yes these big sessions certainly do take it out of you. I am so tired, but I also know that I wont sleep. So I have resorted to something I very rarely do .. taken some sleep medication. I hope it will help. Then an easy day tomorrow with nothing planned. I read that you are now back to your volunteer work. The volunteer work that I do, is still on hold. I am looking forward to nursing homes reopening, so I can start visiting the residents there again. I miss them, and phone calls are simply not the same as a physical visit. Soon I hope.

@outlander ... I am holding up reasonably well so far Li'l One. Exhausted and experiencing ongoing internal shaking from the anxiety of covering some of the topics of discussion today. But mostly I am managing. Sounds like another difficult day for you Sweetie. The very fact that you are not talking about it, usually means its not great. I hope things improve soon. Your specialist appointment is on Friday I think. I wonder will it shine some light on whats going on with your physical health? I really hope so. Fingers crossed for the best possible outcome. Only another day and a half, and hopefully you will finally have some answers, and solutions.

@Pollyotter ... I hear that you are really struggling tonight. I'm really sorry to know that. You are such a strong woman ... I know you will make it through. Use all the skills you have learned or call on a help line if necessary. I am here to hold your hand if that will help, or to listen silently if thats what you need. Although having said that, I have taken some sleep meds, and may well fall asleep. But I would like to be by your side to reassure you all will be well. Tomorrow is another day, a new start. I remind you of your message to yourself a little earlier tonight:

You have a strength in you that no one else knows of.

Stand up for you because you are worth it from start to end.

In answer to a question you asked yourself .. yes Pollyotter ... life is worth the battle. I agree it should not be this hard, and what happened to you should never have happened .. to anyone. But it did ... and you survived what happened because you are strong, courageous and have a will to live and thrive.

Hi @Former-Member ... very much thinking of you my very special friend/s ... Izzy, Kimmy and Nikki. Please take good care of each other. Sleep soundly and in safety.

Good night everyone ... I am nodding off here, thanks to sleep meds. And its just starting to rain ... lovely. I can sleep to the sound of rain on the tin roof.

@outlander ... Hey Li'l One ... I'm hearing you, re your Worry Room post. I'm here for you if you want to talk. With you sitting quietly with a cuppa in hand, if you'd prefer some quiet reflection. And offering a shoulder to cry on if thats what you need. The only other thing I will say to you, is that YOU need to be the priority here ... your wellbeing and your ongoing safety matter. You matter. Do whatever it takes to ensure you are safe. Hugs sweetie. 🤗💕

Did the sleeping tablet help you to sleep last night, @Former-Member ? I hope so. I also hope you can find enough time for yourself in the coming days, despite your caring responsibilities for your husband. It sounds like you still need to do some work at home on putting the strategies from yesterday's session into place? I hope that goes smoothly and is not too difficult, which it may well be, perhaps... Thinking of you and hoping for a quiet and restful day for you if possible. I want to write 'peaceful' as well, but I'm not sure how much peace you're able to feel at the moment 😞

Hi @Former-Member - How are you doing today? Yes, I am at work. Trying to keep distracted so that my anxiety levels are under control. My blood pressure gets so high when I am worried, so It's something I need to keep in check. I am very tired, but I am managing OK.

I love the crystal @eth , just gorgeous

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Just a quick check-in for @Former-Member and @Lee82 .. you have both been very quiet this past day or so.

Are you both okay? Izzy ... do you have horse therapy again tomorrow? Perhaps another visit to the beach afterwards? Any success in getting an admission to hospital that Sean was going to look into for you?

I worry about you both when I dont see you around for a while. But at the same time, I respect your decision not to be here, if you feel thats best for you right now. You know you have a great number of us members here who care about you a heck of a lot. And we all wish there was something we could do to make life easier for you somehow. But as that isnt possible, I am here to offer my love and support from afar. I hope you are doing all you can in order to keep yourselves safe.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@NatureLover... thank you for your message this morning. Yes I got several hours sleep last night, which is the best for some time. Sleep meds typically are not great for me, but I guess they help in a minor way. I had a quiet day today as planned, with no dramas cropping up along the way thankfully. That in itself is a rarety lately.

A busy day tomorrow, at least in the morning. A trip to a bigger town to see a visiting Sydney neurologist for Mr Sherry. So its an hours drive there, plus back again. He will review Mr Sherry's Parkinsons Disease. He sees a different Neurologist who treats his auto-immune encephalitis. He is based in a city between Sydney and here.

Yes you're right ... I do need to do some more work on strategies I discussed with my psych yesterday. Among those is a review and rewrite of my Safety Plan. Now that we know she will still be practicing, despite selling her psych business, she wants me to add her to my Plan. We talked about a few points to do with that. You can write peaceful, though you are right in assuming that its a rarety around here. But it is something to wish for. I didnt see you around much today. Are you okay ... perhaps taking a bit of time out for some self care?

@Molliex... I already responded to you via your thread. I hope you are sleeping now, as you have an early start in getting to the hospital in the morning. I will be thinking of you tomorrow, and hoping for the best possible outcome for you.

Thanks @Snowie ... yes I did get some sleep last night. Not enough .. but more than I've been getting for some time. And I even had a nap after lunch, and totally flaked for 2 whole hours! So that was nice. Your kids are on school hols next week? Gee that was quick. So happy for you to hear that you are planning to get to the snow for a week or two. You so deserve a bit of time away to reinvigorate and recharge after all you've been through with your treatment and hospitalisation lately. It sounds fabulous.

Hi @Sans911 .. saw you around earlier. I expect you will be missing our little @outlander, as am I. And no doubt many others around here too.

@Former-Member... How are you doing? You've been more quiet than usual today. I hope the packing, sorting and culling process is going well prior to your move. Its getting close now. Hope the back and knees are holding up okay so far. Cant have you breaking down now. I read that your Son has been accepted into an IT uni course. Thats great, good for him. And I'll bet you're proud of him too. Remember to take enough breaks over the coming week. Take yourself out for a cuppa or lunch occasionally, and take yourself away from all the work and boxes. They will all still be there when you get back. Moving day will be a big day for you. Will you get there in one day, or need to stay somewhere overnight?

Hi @eth ... thats quite okay ... I know things havent been easy for you lately.

Thank you so much for your lovely words there Eth ... just what I need to hear while my overall confidence is really low right now. And I really love the Lapis Lazuli crystal gemstone,as well as all that it symbolises and encourages ... thank you so much. Perhaps that too will help with my lack of confidence. Its a really lovely thing for you to post here for me. I really appreciate it. 🤗💕💕

Now Eth, are you saying that its good having me stuck here and out of general circulation? 😉💖 I think the situation is causing a lot of confusion for many members and clear disruption to conversations. Members who I would usually be supporting and responding regularly on their threads ... I'm now having to drag conversations back to here to respond. Its very difficult for a conversation to flow under those circumstances. So it's obviously not ideal for anyone. But I'm doing the best I can to follow instructions, and members have been very accommodating.

I have to say, that the support I continue to receive here from so many lovely members has been unexpected, and thus all the more valued and appreciated. I certainly do not take any of this for granted, because I know that it can be snatched away from me at any time.

Yes I've seen your updates on your thread. I saw that you were tossing up whether to go to the farm or not this weekend. In the end you decided to stay home and have a quiet weekend alone. Perhaps a good decision in the end. I'm sure there will be other opportunities to get to the farm again soon. Perhaps you may get a bit more achieved with regards to the continuing bun fight with the public Housing application. What a drama all thats been!

It sounds like your new psychologist appointment yesterday went very well, and she is a good fit for you. Good to read that you will be seeing her weekly after the week after next. I was interested to read that your plan is to return to your other psych once she returns from maternity leave. Perhaps if this one works out really well, you may change your mind and stay with this new one? I realise you have 3 years of weekly sessions invested with your other one, but sometimes fresh eyes and ears could be a good thing. I'll be interested to hear from you down the track as to how it all works out.

Sorry its taken me all day to respond to your lovely post this morning. I have been taking things easy and not posting much today. A quiet day, as I had planned.

@Faith-and-Hope.. I just noticed you circulating around the threads just now. I also read that you have completed your final uni assignment ... Hooray for you ... well done. I hope you get to enjoy a bit of a breather during the semester break.

I'm heading off to bed now everyone ... good night, and thank you all for being the wonderful people that you are.

Love and gratitude to you all. 🤗💕
