Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Okay @outlander .. thats pretty rough. This offline person is obviously very open about her experiences. Are they aware of your past? Certainly adding to your distress would be the fact that you have sighted your abuser and even yelled out to you. I cannot even imagine what I would do if that happened to me from the person who assaulted me. He is in a different state to me, but thats bad enough.

You will be in a state of ptsd hyperarousal for some time Outlander. I know its difficult given that you have the kids tonight. But please try to avoid any stimulants (alcohol, caffeine) because the last thing you need right now are more stimuli. Do your best to find a bit of time this afternoon or evening to do something like PMR (have you tried progressive muscle relaxation?) or watch something distracting on tele.

And please @outlander ... give a help line a call if you find yourself in the situation where you feel you cannot keep yourself safe. Perhaps its a good thing in one way that you have the kids, its at least a distraction for you.

One more thing .... it doesnt matter if you have the kids tonight or not Li'l One ... if your pain gets beyond bearable ... get yourself to A&E to have it checked out and more effective meds to help. The eldest sibling can take care of the younger ones in an emergency. And your pain could be such an emergency sweetie.

Just tagging your other main supporters here too so they are up to date with whats happening with you. I hope you dont mind, but I'm very worried about you, and I know @Sans911 and @Snowie are wonderful supports for you. Please make yourself #1 priority here Outlander.

Hey mama S.

How are you doing .

I am sorry for not being around as much the past few days. I have been working so hard but having fun as well.

I am doing good mentally . I am sorting out everything that I need to. Now that Covid is calming down a lot of options are becoming available .

....................................................................................

Hi there @Pollyotter and thank you for your post, as above. I am really happy to hear that you are doing quite good mentally. Such good news, especially after your major setback last week (or was it the week before?). Its great that you have been able to sort out some things which needed to be done. Yes the COVID restrictions having been relaxed, is changing things somewhat. I think within QLD its opened up a lot. Just not the borders into other states yet.

When you say that options are now starting to become available ... is that in the work field? To have options is always a good feeling, as opposed to feeling trapped in something we feel we have not choice over. So I really hope you look into your options and come up with something which works really well for you. I really admire how resilient and positive you are. I wish I could be more like you.

Please dont apologise for not being around much lately. You work ... I dont ... there really is no comparison at all. Any time you get back to me is a bonus, and I thank you for that.

The fact that you have also managed to find some time to have a bit of fun really makes my heart sing. I hope this continues for you, and I look forward to your next catchup.

Sherry (AKA Mama S) 💖

Oh gosh, @outlander ...I'm very concerned about you. I'm so sorry this happened today... please take care. I agree with Sherry, that if you need to go to emergency, please go... 💔

I hope this is OK to post here (am still learning the ways of the forums here, and don't want to step on any toes). I don't think @Former-Member will mind, as you're a kind person, Sherry...but feel free to let me know if I do step on any toes.

I am so very sorry with what has transpired for you today @outlander . That is all terrible. Sitting with you here hun praying that the night becomes a little more bearable for you and that the kids are ok. I agree with sherry. If your pain gets worse you need to prioritise your own health hun and get to the emergency dep. we are very worried about you here and will be around for a while if you need a little extra support or just want to chitchat. Hopefully the kids are a good distraction for you and don't make things worse.
sending you a gentle hug @outlander hope that is ok. ❤️

Yes of course its okay @NatureLover 🌺

As @outlander posted to here, its most appropriate that you also respond to her post here. Sometimes people elect to carry a conversation over to another thread, often for the purposes of keeping everything on one thread. But here is fine, since its a trigger warning one anyway. Just to clarify, if Outlander had posted the above post to a social thread then it is advisable to carry any subsequent response to her own thread. I hope that makes sense?

Dont put yourself down Nature ... you are doing just fine, and I know your input is very welcome anywhere you go. Its only me who has to be wary about where I tread .. certainly not you. 😊 I reiterate that everybody is welcome here on my thread. I do not discriminate against anyone, and you are certainly not stepping on my toes. 💕

Mama S

Yhe So I have joined Zonta. It's an organization that helps women in need. It's an amazing charity to be apart of. On Saturday we had cut out 200 stencils for breast cushions for women who had a mastectomy. The project that was allocated to me is to make a bucket to give to mothers in need. I selection of items give 21 meals for 1 week and don't need a fridge . some lollies for the kids and come toiletries. The idea behind it is just to tide them over until a solution can be found. The best outcome would be a job.

So let's see what the other members say. I am the youngest of the whole group and I think the oldest is 82? .I can't really remember. I am excited about this because the company that I work for has a charity section so the collaboration is going to be a great force of good for women.

How have things been on your end?

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

It wa an old guy sharing experiences @Former-Member 😞 it made it so awkward and hes not really someone I get along with either. Hes my pops friend but we werent talking in front of pop cause it was up at the school (he was taking his grandson to school and I was taking sister) . I dont even know how he got onto the topic but I wanted to get out of there. I wa trying to stop myself having flashbacks enough to drive home.

My abuser lives close by and his mother lives 2 streets away from me so im always on edge and now its made it so much worse. I dont want to feel what I feel right now, I know its normal in most cases but I dont want to feel it unless its happening on a normal basis (im sorry I cant be specific because itll be triggerring)

im sorry I dont want you guys to worry, I dont mean to make you worry @Former-Member @Lee82 @NatureLover @Sans911 and I dont know where to post atm. I dont know where the right places are and im trying to keep things in a spot and I dont know. Im sorry.
