Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

@Former-Member ... As a previous carer then, you will know what to expect. I'm sorry to hear of your heartbreaking experience of caring in the past. Being a carer is not an easy thing to cope with.

I hope you do follow up on obtaining some help alternatives for the coming 2 weeks. Its needed for both you and hubby, and peace of mind for all.

I am okay today, thank you for asking. And you are welcome of course to pop in any time you would like to. I look forward to that.

I dont know whats going on with your missing post. But its annoying when it happens. I didnt receive any email notifications for anything other than what is showing up here now. So perhaps its lost in computerland, or space, or whereever these things go.

I never feel I have to respond Pippi ... I respond because I want to. 😊

That is good news indeed Pippi .. that you and hubby are getting along okay. Makes your caring duties that much easier. I dont expect it will be easy for him though, to be reliant on someone to help do basics. He may get a bit grumpy and frustrated over the coming couple of weeks. Try to remain calm and take lots of deep breaths when things get a little difficult.

@NatureLover

Yes the whole discussion around HSP is an interesting one isnt it? I have all bar one of the characteristics, as you would have read in the earlier discussion.

I just visited and posted on your germophobia thread. My OCD does not present as germophobia, which I have explained a little more on your thread. So I wont go into it more here just now.

My clinical psychologist had her business for sale for some time. Back in February it looked like it was sold, but it fell through when the new buyer had a major health scare. So my psych at that point had decided to just close the business ... shut the doors and cease operation. However, once that news got out .. there were other buyers came to the party. Eventually a sale was made, and my psych will now go back and work part time for the new owners. She has a young family and a sideline business of breeding therapy dogs, and was spending too much time doing admin things and running the business. She never wanted to stop doing her clinical work, but did need to cut back her hours. So it had been a very difficult time not knowing what would happen between about December until only recently really. But the good news is that I will still be able to see her, which is a big big relief to me.

@NatureLover I read elsewhere that you have had a very difficult past day or two. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you remember to do lots of self care and dont overdo things on the forums. Compassion fatigue is a very real risk for HSP people. You need to pace yourself and know when to step back for your own preservation. Please know that you can tag me any time if you feel the need to talk.

He's a person that likes to be on the go @Former-Member So it's not so easy for him. He's enjoying being spoilt though. I'm glad I'm being useful. Looking into how I can contribute to life in a positive way. Volunteer in some way. Trying not to think of all the negatives. They are trying to take over. Wow. Sleep deprivation is trying to get me down. Cuppa time. 🥰

Good evening @Sans911 ... 💗Sounds like a pleasant day away for you today. I hope you are doing better now, than you have been for some time. Sending some love and kind thoughts your way.

@outlander Sounds like its been a really tough day for you. Dont beat yourself up over your lapse. You are facing so much difficulty both physically and emotionally. Forget what you did today, forgive yourself, and move on from it. I'm just relieved you are essentially okay. You are ... arent you? 💜

@Snowie ... A big day for you tomorrow .. going home. And I expect that will be both exciting as well as challenging. Lots of unknowns in the mix too. I will be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping all goes well. 🐶

Sherry 💕
