Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Oh dear ... I am really sorry not to have responded to any of you here yet. I have come here numerous times, and have felt completely overwhelmed. I have had a few triggers in the past few days also, which has not helped my ability to string a few sentences together, or make any sense in what I'm saying. But its bothering me that I have not yet got back to you all. So please bear with me as I try to wade my way through all this. I will get to all of you eventually, but it will likely be in batches as I feel able to do so.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I'm really sorry everyone, I just cant seem to motivate myself to get started on responses. And I'm feeling bad about that. So many of you posted very caring, loving and constructive responses ... and you each deserve a proper individual response.

Perhaps I will commence with a more general response, then an update on where things have been and are still at. Then I will try to respond individually to those I feel I should. So here is a start, an attempt to try to explain where I was at when I posted here on the evening of 13th May, and why I was so upset.

When I posted here on 13th May saying I felt I was not wanted here, and was being forced to leave ... I was very distressed. And I said exactly how I felt at the time. Yes, I can be too honest for my own good sometimes. I thought I was being pushed off the forums, and that hurt so much. A large number of you here are my friends, my confidants, my lifeline. Some of you I've known for close to 4 years when I first started this thread as a new member in September 2016. Some of you I've known only a relatively short time, but I have become close to you too. Its one of the lovely things about the forums ... we become very close to people. I guess when we open up daily to others about our greatest fears, our innermost secrets, our biggest life concerns ... it creates a very close bond. And I very much feel that bond with you.

Anyway I took the Managers advice and took some time out (10 difficult days) during which time I had a chance for some self reflection. I realise now that Managers were trying to urge me to take some time out for my own welfare. I was struggling badly at the time, over numerous things, including some forum related issues.

I was also very troubled, badly triggered at the time and struggling with life in general. I think this caused my interpretation of the email I received from Managers, to be somewhat warped and I overreacted. I have since apologised to Managers and Moderators. @Former-Member @s-jay @Zahlia

I dont know why I continue to feel so insecure here. Certainly the Managers and Moderators have been very patient with me. I just constantly seem to need reassurance that I'm not being watched and monitored in order to find any little thing to warrant ousting me ... almost bordering on paranoia at times. When I'm feeling particularly overwhelmed, upset and anxious ... and PTSD symptoms kick in ... it's as though I deliberately push the boundaries in order to force their hand. Force them to make the cut ... thus giving me a sense of control over the situation. Weird aye?

I believe I have a problem with people in a position of power and/or control over me. I was completely overpowered when I was raped and subsequently have been totally controlled by a narcissistic husband. I've been let down too many times by people with control or power over me. And it freaks me out. I have enormous difficulty in placing my trust in people ... I dont trust their motives and I dont trust what they tell me. I know this is my problem, and something I should discuss with my clinical psychologist when I get to see her again in July. And I will do so.

When it appeared to me that I was being forced off the forums, I panicked and had a major melt down. In past experience elsewhere, it was when I was most in need of support, that the rug was pulled from under me ... leaving me without any support. I nearly didn't survive those times and I almost didn't want to. So when I got that email from managers that afternoon, it felt very much as though history was repeating itself. It was under those circumstances that I wrote that highly emotional post on 13th May. I should not have done so. I should have gone away and thought about it, instead of reacting. I should have reassured myself that here, is not there.

Although I posted an apology on Monday on another thread (where I also posted on that night) I did not tag everyone from here. So I just want to apologise to anybody here who may have been affected by my highly emotional post on 13th May. I am deeply sorry if I caused any hurt or distress to you. I was speaking the truth as I saw and felt at the time. My only defence is that my thinking can become a little twisted around these things when I'm feeling under duress.

I will write again soon with an update on what's been happening over the past 2 weeks. But I wanted firstly to try to explain my behaviour on 13th May before moving on. I'm not defending it, just providing an explanation as to why I reacted the way I did. I have thought a lot about it while I had my break from the forums.
