Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Just caught up on posts here and on Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing @Former-Member @Sans911

I will add my voice here to how much you are wanted, needed and loved by so many. Unfortunately though Sherry it is only you that can believe that and I am hearing how very difficult you are finding that right now. When the source of so much of our support also becomes painful and hurtful to access it seems an insummountable mountain to climb. The members are here to support you through this but it also needs to be accepted by you. We are not going anywhere and will always be here for you - and that is what the community does. I want to emphasise that it is a peer to peer support forum - and your peers want to support you - that has been shown by the many posts to you saying just that. I also understand though that some of your posts lately may have given the mods and CMs a completely different picture in isolation or as a collective of posts as you have clearly been struggling so much - you have said as much in what you have written as in what you have not - and a major cause of that has been the forum itself. So whilst I do not want you to go anywhere because like others I love and care about you, I also want you to not have to be so anxious and affected by anything that goes on in relation to the forum. This is the dilemma - what to do for your own health and welfare - and weighing up if you can get through this on the forum or it is affecting you more by being here right now - and all that is extremely difficult to work through when you are so very clearly not doing well at all. That I wish I could change for you Hon - you are very much loved, very much a part of this community and many of us consider you not only a valuable supporter but friend. I really hope you can find your way back Sherry because the forum would not be the same without your caring nature, compassion, experience and insight. Sending you so much love Hon - you are wanted, you are needed and you matter to us

Oh @Sherry, you sounded so gloomy in YESTERDAYS post (Far-and-away thread), that i'll just have to share my EOR profile with you atm lol.
Are you familiar with the children's storybook character EEYORE (in Christopher Robin - Whinnie the Pooh"). Don't think anyone depicts DEPRESSION quite as well as the little blue donkey.

EOR defaults to seeing the bad side of things and it weighs him down terribly. His friends accept this as part of who he is.

Like Most of us here accept our shared battle with depression...

But

its still hard to hear you say words like:
"not resilient"
"far from inspiring"
"totally incapable"
"hopeless" ...
Maybe because you speak them over yourself as absolutes... 😞

Our own tongue, our words are powerful in shaping our own destiny more than what anyone else says.

You don't really believe all those words do you? Not all the time?

Blackdog's words arent more powerful than the cascade of compliments given you here, from us, are they? Don't do that to yourself, don't believe it. YoI know you FEEL it with all you're going through, i so get that. But you know, I have to remind myself all the time - feelings are not facts.

You are so much more than blackdog's lies.

We see your beautiful spirit beyond the depression, it shines through here so much, you shine here most days, we don't focus on failings here, but encourage the sparkle in you, and the way you encourage others here... with empathy and compassion...

You gotta sprinkle some of this love on yourself too you know. At least tell yourself "there is hope" and you "do deserve it" I should talk :face_with_rolling_eyes:

"WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER"
Don't give up 💞.

Sending this pic cos I believe you deserve a good sanctuary where you are respected and can cuddle a beloved.

Dont let bad stuff in to your mind.

A lot of people care about you. Put some distance between you and any who cannot respect you, let alone love you.
