Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

@Faith-and-Hope @outlander @CheerBear @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Owlunar @BlueBay @Zoe7 @Snowie @eth ... I hope I havent missed anyone who replied to me tonight. I just wanted to thank you all.

Mr Sherry has been nice to me tonight. I think he knows he has pushed me too far ... near breaking point. He relies on me, and needs me to be here for him. So he backs off, giving a temporary short respite. Recharging his batteries for the next time. He is very unwell, it saddens me greatly.

There is so much I feel I need to talk about, but unfortunately I cant here. I spoke to my psych earlier today ... she rang me after an earlier email exchange. She wants to see me tomorrow in her office. She has sold her business, but its not finalised until end of June.

You all had lovely kind words about me. I appreciate that .. I really do. But the way I see things ... I am not valued here or anywhere else; I am a disappointment and a failure both here and everywhere else; I am not valuable nor precious to anyone either here or in real life. Thats just how I see things right now.

I am merely tolerated here .. nothing more and nothing less. I'm not really wanted here, that much I know. I'm a bit like a whacky relative whom everyone is kinda fond of and is therefore kind to. But I'm not special to anybody. Most of you have really strong bonds and connections with at least one other special person here. I dont have that, though I thought once that I did ... In reality, I'm just a fringe dweller .. on the outside looking in. Thats nothing new to me, and mostly thats just fine. Sometimes though, I really just want someone to care about ME ... who I am, what I am ... and the things that I go through. I want to be heard and understood. I need a voice, which I dont feel I have. I want to be told that one day everything will be okay.

Your special to me. I care very much about you, for wh oo you are as a person @Former-Member definently not someone on the outside or that whacky relative. Your well and truley ingrained into my forum family 💖

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Yep, not a "whacky relative" @Former-Member, unless of course we are all "whacky relatives" ..... cos we love you for who you are, and love having you chatting with here, or on other threads across the forums.

I am in a bit of a "low" at the moment ...,. "bit of" is a bit dodgy too ..... so I go quieter, but I am still here, and listening to you for what you can talk about here. Not all things need to be said, and we know you well enough to be able to read between the lines. We know you are in great pain, and carrying a load in those broad shoulders of yours ..... so please, just hang in there and keep taking the best care you can of yourself on the rough road you're walking there.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I hear you @Former-Member. I really do. I'm sorry you feel so worthless and helpless. Much of what you describe I've felt the same. I don't know you very well but I like you, and I want to know more about you. But I know pretty much no matter what any one says here, your mind is in a dark, scary place and you possibly feel very alone and very lost. Give it some time because you have been away from here for a while. People are getting used to having you around again, and other people that don't know you well might want to get to know you better. Could you please tag me in your posts?

I'm off to sleep but I just wanted to drop by here. Your pain is valid, and yes do deserve to have a voice and be heard and understood.

s from me too @Former-Member I'm sorry to hear how you're feeling, what your thinking is around being here. I very much appreciate and value your presence, as with several others I see here. I don't have a really frequent dialogue with a particular person here these days either, but I still have really good connections with quite a few people and we catch up when we can. You are heard and seen by many more than you realise I think. Sending my warmest wishes. You were very missed when you took your step away recently and many of us were really happy to see you return. xoxo

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I'm sorry @Former-Member 😢

You give so much here, maybe too much for the likes of me who has learnt not to get too close to anyone. I'm sorry if I made you feel I don't care. I did notice you've been super quiet, and glad I came looking for you this morning. I get very selfish and withdrawn I know, but I to work hard at answering personal messages that talk too me, that I'm tagged in, that's all I can handle most days. I'm so sorry you feeling left out too. I'm thinking it's just the nature of online chat forums. It takes a lot of hard work to maintain connections, keep up with everyone's journey... I can't do it half as God as so many here, guess not being a reader doesn't help, and eye strain is an issue cause all I have is this tiny mobile phone. I donno, excuses I guess. I'm so sorry I let you down. Or made you feel like a fringe dweller. If it's any consolation, I feel like a leper and honestly believe you have a better chance of getting on with the others if you're not seen to associate with me. I'm a disappointment to many. Life can make us feel that way, disconnected and unworthy... But then, out of the blue some mornings come where the sun shines bright and the air is so fresh and the birds, they just keep singing. I open the curtain and the autumn leaves glisten in the gentle breeze with dewdops, I take a deep breath and smile and gratitude. For a brief moment I realise it's ok to stand alone, just me and God who must love me to give me this one expanding moment to strengthen my heart, to take with me to face the day.

Hang in there Sherry, you need a break and I hope your psych can help find a way. If not I pray nature can make you feel worthy like it has me this morning. You are precious, you do belong, interaction with people isn't everything. You are enough without us too. Please be strong. I've been where you are, it's aweful, but trust me - it will pass and there will be powerful moments of joy and self discovery you'll be glad you waited for. Hugz and hugz precious lady 💌

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member

There are a couple of sad truths involved here - and as much as we tell you how much we care and how important you are to us the fact remains that the world can be a horribly miserable place if we look others to fill the spaces in our hearts and minds, our spirits and souls even because life itself has a recorded effort of disappointments for us

I have written it elsewhere in the forum that we have to be our own best friends - to learn to love and respect ourselves, to care about ourselves and to learn to put ourselves first and for many people - mostly women - this seems a hard ask - and I wonder why it is that so many people feel that way and how and why I have found my path to self-value. I only have a few answers and this is what I have come to through nearly a lifetime of investigation

Other people will let us down at some stage - I have had a big one this week - and yes - I understand why this has happened and it has nothing to do with me - it's life - and the biggest one - my mother - yep - I couldn't change that one - in many cases one or both of our parents started us on this path of sef-devaluation - and here we are today

For you - you are doing everything you can to help your husband and he is being nice atm but you have experienced this before - he needs you and you feel that his is backing up to recharge himself for the next onslaught.

Your staying and putting up with this can be a strength - I couldn't stay and put up with my ex-h though I put up long enough - it was a good move to separate - but I think this is a trigger-point. Your husband wants you there to care for him but doesn't seem to care for you. He can't or won't. You are investing the very deepest part of yourself to care for him and you have been for a long time and there is no pay-off for you

We really do care about you here and words are cheap - even words written from the heart can miss the heart - it's strange when I think back to the few toys I had as a child and loved the old hand-me-downs from some other forgotten child who outgrew them. I remember them better than the new toys I got when I was older and how strange is that.

To me the worn out and battered people in the world have vast stories I want to hear and I can tell you have so many you haven't told yet - I can tell you this and I know you will read these words and they might or might not sink it but they are true

I do care and through the limited world of cyber-space it's really hard to let you know you are not a fringe-dweller in my life - I woke up - ah - nearly two hours ago and then spent time thinking about your post - and know in my heart that you need to love yourself and keep your promises to yourself and care about yourself because the rest of the world is inadequate because we are human

If we put stock in the world it will eventually disappoint us - we need to find a way to feel ourselves of value to ourselves and build on that. We know our own weak points and we can find something in life that gives us joy - we need that - it is a prerequistite - and it's there - within us

I am so sorry life has dealt you such a rough deck - you have so much happening that is hard and you have been abused. I don't know any way to put it better - but don't let yourself down - don't sell yourself short. One thing life is full of is self-fulfilling prophecies - things that come true because we believe they will - try and find something that can come true for you and work on that - this forum is one terrific place to start - I have found it so

And I think this may be because the forum is full of people like me to start with - scarred by life - and I think my scars, my grey-hair - if that's what colour it is - hard to tell - my glasses - I had them since I was a child - my partial dentures - my chronic pain - my battles, victories and losses - all of these things - are the badges of my experience and I never caused one of the searing memories I have

I have learned something from everything that has happened in my life - and to this - I give you my best
