Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Thanks again @Shaz51

All okay, Mr Sherry now in bed asleep. Im relieved, and can finally breathe easier. 💓

Unfortunately, the coffee table is likely unrecoverable. 😳

Thanks to you too @outlander ... Notifications seem very random over last two days. Im getting them very much out of order.

I think I will get an early night tonight. Arm quite sore from a few days ago 😔 Pretty sure its not infected, more likely I banged it today and stirred it up a bit.

Okay .. good night everyone. 😴

Sherry 💕

Hey @Former-Member. I am so sorry it's so hard at the moment. It does sound very frightening and awful. Eggshell situations are so difficult and keep you in such a state of alert.

I wish there was a way to make it better for you Sherry. No-one deserves what you go through. You deserve so much better.

Thinking of you lots. Here with you and for you.

s @Former-Member Sometimes I'd like to say more in support for you, but find it difficult because I've been where you are in the past. Learning about the 'cycle of abuse' really helped me.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Okay .. another attempt to catch up with everyones posts from a few days ago. Sorry for the delay. I have been feeling a little overwhelmed by a number of things, so thank you for your patience. I will always get there in the end.

@Faith-and-Hope... thank you, thats a lovely thing to say ... "sitting together with you in yours is a way of bringing friendship and love into my life as a result of the suffering ..... so y'all are moments of joy for me ...... despite your own struggles and challenges, and deep sadness".

You then went on to say that you hope people in my life can see the self-sacrifice which goes into standing by Mr Sherry. The thing is ... I dont want people to see that. I really dont. I'm not trying to be a martyr or anything, that doesnt fit with who I am. It would embarrass me should people know any of this. Its all very much a closely guarded secret. I feel I would be unfairly judged by others, and likely seen as weak. Whereas I dont see myself as a weak person, but more a morally strong person. I have a very strong sense of right and wrong. Sure, I know what happens here is wrong, but it isnt me who is committing the wrong. However, it would be wrong of me to abandon him, as it would be very detrimental to him, and also to others.

Does any of this make sense @Faith-and-Hope? I hope it does. My head is a bit of a muddle today, and I am feeling very inadequate and undervalued, in all sorts of ways. But I figure you may understand some of this.

@Snowie.. Thanks for the love and hugs. I read that your hospital admission went well and you are settling in. Sorry to read that family visits are somewhat limited due to Covid-19 restrictions. But at least you are able to see them, albeit for only a short time. Best of luck with the commencement of your treatment tomorrow. I will be thinking of you.

Not a problem @eth ... I know you support me, and knowing that, is enough. I realise its hard for you to be here, having been there and done that. Thank you, I will try to read up a little about 'the cycle of abuse'. Your support and advice is valued and very much appreciated.

@Owlunar... I hope your MRI went well. Perhaps you have received your results already?

Yes I suppose thats very much a part of being a Highly Sensitive Person. We HSPs do typically feel things very intensely. Whether that be pain, disappointment, distress, grief, anger, resentment, loss, hurt ... in short we are much more emotionally reactive than the average person. We feel very deeply, and can become easily overwhelmed. We also take on other peoples problems and can be deeply impacted by their moods. All this can be very uncomfortable at times. There are times I feel very much overburdened with things. I am definitely feeling an emotional overload right now.

Your hard times, grief and sorrow has made you into who you are now @Owlunar. So it isnt all bad, because you have grown and adapted as necessary.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I understand very well @Former-Member .... I stood by my man in the same way, thinking it was the illness that was the cause of the appalling ways he was behaving. Now, in light of what has happened, the issue was clearly personality based, and a combination of masking, being work-absent, being overly invested in his birth-family relationships, and me doing a bl%dy good job of catering to all his life's needs. Once we sold our business, he couldn't keep his two different lives in the one arena ..... his "other" life are up what had been "our" life with him, and the rest is rapidly becoming history.

If that major life change hadn't occurred, we might still be functioning on the same basis, but it is what it is ......

I have nothing but admiration for you, living the way you choose to, making a life for yourself within that life ..... including your very valuable place here with us ❣️
