Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hey @Former-Member Unfortunately there is a lot on here over may weeks now that have added to me needing to stay away - sometimes we need that space to be able to deal with our own lives and other's struggles only increase the pain - especially when there is nothing we can do to help. That does not mean I do not think about everyone but when it gets to the stage where it is impacting our own MH then it is necessary to take that step back. That is exactly where I found myself - I was feeling others' pain so deeply that it was further affecting my own MH. I could feel myself falling back into old habits and heading down into the darkness again ...and with so many in so much pain on here I could not share or discuss any of it myself. For that reason I needed very much to distance myself from all that pain and concentrate on getting myself back to a safer level where I could begin to rebuild my own health - I am not there yet but have stopped the downward slide for now.

I have picked up on bits and pieces over the last few days but still find I cannot read back through threads much or support anyone more than just hitting the support button. I do read posts I am tagged in but very much feel the weight of some of those and therefore cannot respond ...I know you get that and that it is often self-care and self-preservation that has to be my primary concern. I hope in time this changes but for now it needs to be this way for me to be able to look after myself. It is a double edged sword also because I very much miss everyone here and that leaves a massive hole in my life - just like you I care deeply for everyone here but feeling I am no use or no support to those I care about just adds to my own pain presently. Still need time - don't know how much but know I am very much thinking of you daily also and very much care. Love and hugs to you always Hon whether I am here or not

Thanks for you continued support @BlueBay @Sophia1 @Shaz51 @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope ... you are all wonderful people ... never forget it. I dont know where I'd be without you sometimes. 😊💕

@Zoe7 thank you .... but honestly, no explanation was necessary. I do understand .. completely. I also understand that when you feel as low and triggered as you have been lately, that there is one very special person here whom you lean on. I get it, truly. After all, who can blame you for that? She is very special after all, and going through a tough time herself. I certainly do not wish to impose upon what seems to be private conversations between you and @Faith-and-Hope . Hence the reason I've stayed away from that thread, to leave it clear for you two. Please take all the time you need to get yourself right, and only come back when you are in a good frame of mind again, less triggered and with emotions under control. We can all wait until then, and your presence will be all the more special when you do return. I hope Cat and Toby are well and that you are taking comfort from their presence. I also hope that you have your next school placement confirmed soon. That will be one less concern for you. Please take care, and never feel the need to be here if you do not want to, or feel unable to for your own safety.

@Zoe7, it doesn't have to be "all or nothing" here I don't think, just be in the moment. Some don't like it but it's my best here most the time. I can't keep up either 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️

Hi @Zoe7

I have missed you lately - it's good to catch up - and I understand

We need to take care of our health - physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual - first and of you find yourself falling backwards then yes - you need to take time out

Feeling everyone's pain would be so hard - and there is a lot of pain in the world - I think you have done a fantastic job here but I have found it necessary to fall back often during the last few years since I have been in on-line groups

And it's okay to just read posts - that is fine - that's keeping in touch silently and privately. .

We need to practise self-preservaton and self-care - I have really worked out that doing something nice for ourselfs is putting ourselves first and being single-minded at times and also - it's a double-edged sword too because keeping away - yeah - it makes me feel isolated on the days I don't come here

Sending you my best thoughts

Dec
