Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi everyone,

Saw this discussion and just wanted to help address these feelings. It’s great to see all the support happening here around this too 🌟

  • being moderated: can be hard and it can feel personal, we understand that inevitably when being asked to edit a post it can feel hard to not feel like you did something wrong or to even feel a little hurt. To reassure you, every time we do email a member we view it as an opportunity to collaborate by sharing information around why our guidelines exist and how you can share your story in a way that is still authentic but maintains safety, anonymity and respect.
  • process of working with members: when we notice reoccurring breaches, we will reach out to work with you on how we can better support you in your forum use and posting so that you feel better able to engage and connect
  • noticing triggers: Like you have mentioned here @Former-Member, it can be really valuable for members to notice the triggers that might come up when feeling impacted when posts are moderated. On top of working with us around the forums use, it can be really beneficial to explore these triggers on a broader front with supports outside the forums as well 😊

If anyone ever feels unsure about their posts, the forums or engaging - the forums team are always happy to listen and work with you around that, so please feel free to send us an email team@saneforums.org 💙

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

You are a beautiful person @Former-Member - perhaps too sensitive to this world which can be a difficult sometimes - but that doesn't change you from being the person I know and I think is someone I really want to connect with

People who treat you badly aren't worth it really - they do not deserve our time or our sorrow but having been through something different but just as painful on-line I know it can occupy our thoughts - alas - that is the nature of the on-line world - they can shut us off without reason - and I understand what you are talking about

It won't happen here though - people are well cared for here - the moderators are always watching for any unkind behaviour - and personally I am very glad for that

Sending hugs @Former-Member - you did not deserve thatg

Caring heaps

Dec

Dear @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Bunniekins @Zoe7 @BlueBay @Maggie @Molliex @Shaz51 @Gazza75 @eth @Owlunar @Appleblossom

As opposed to last night, this post will be relatively brief.

Wow .... all your messages overnight and through today are sooooo appreciated. Today I've been completely spent emotionally, and physically exhausted from lack of sleep over the past week. So its taken me a while to get back to you.
I'm really overwhelmed and deeply humbled by all your lovely understanding responses and support. I never expected that. And yet ... I should have known. After all, you're a very special group of people, in so many ways. I've shed lots of grateful tears throughout the day as I have read your messages. I even managed a short sleep during the afternoon, and feel a little better for having done so. Thankfully I had nothing pressing that I needed to do today, outside the home.
I still have a lot of anxious feelings around posting though. Thanks @Former-Member for your post here, as well as for the emails you sent to me over the past week. Despite those emails, I have to say that I was both surprised and reassured to find this morning that I'm still here, and still have a 'live' member account. So thank you for bearing with me. I really hope to plough through this latest setback of mine, and find a way to give something back.
For now .... thank you so very much ... all of you.
Sherry 💕

@Former-Member

It was good you expressed what you were really feeling in your long post. The main thing I heard was your general vulnerability. It is what PTSD does, when the most vulnerable feelings arise so may the fear of trauma replaying itself again and again. If trauma was being excluded online then that may be where you see the threat. I am very glad we had the edit option here. I have edited many posts and may have been a pain in the enck to the mods if I had to "ask" every time. I doubt I would have posted so much ... it was just one of the many design faults in that other forum. No place with people will ever be perfect, but that does not mean we cannot really value the contacts we do have here.

You have so many major stressors; dealing with the loss of your mother, and

caring for an unwell partner often means they always are the "needy" one, the real sense of partnership and your genuine needs often swept under the carpet.

I appreciate your general presence here on th forum. I feel the world is a better place when I read others being supported. It helps guard me from despair. Just how you are; whether it be the VERY BIG NURTURING side of you or the needy side.

i miss people who slip away ... today I chatted to a tradey who felt that way about his last place of residence .. people changing places too quickly ... socially many people feel these days are unstable ... yes we know change is a constant ... but the rates of change matter ...

Hugs for just being you dear Sherry.

Hi @Maxi7 and welcome

to the forums.

I saw you posted here yesterday. I haven’t had any experience with EMDR, but others here have.

@eth , do you know if thereis a thread specific to this topic ? I think you have had a recent conversation around it ..... ?
