Bad experience with therapists

Bad experience with therapists

I thought therapists were more like doctors or dentists where you would get some sort of straight answer and it would be extremely professional. I had no idea it would be talk therapy if I did I wouldn't have gone. Anyway I had a nightmarish childhood long story short. The first psychologist I seen told me I was fat as soon as I walk in the door even though I'm 6 ft 1 and was only 110 at the time. That's ok because she told me the truth and I accept it I'm actually glad for that. I only honestly wanted a female's opinion on psychology I did not know she would be around 26 or so. Living life as an unattractive man is not fun especially when you're young. To be honest it's actually unbearably painful. I finally reached the point where I could live with myself. When I seen this woman watching her body language towards me was so hurtful. I honestly thought she would have been like a seasoned professional 10 years older than me. The worst part was when I spoke about my 20s and my lack of social value watching her screw her nose up and squill in discomfort is something that just reminded me of where I belong. I swore I would never put myself in that position ever again although being stuck in a room with someone like this what can you do. I seem to others after this trying to undo the damage although I received a very similar response although more professional I was completely treated as an invisible person and a dollar sign. For me this was the final straw I now find myself not caring about life or how long it is I also find myself feeling nothing for other human beings. Since those days I have enjoyed other people's pain something I never would have done before something I thought impossible. I wish I could go back to the days where I believed in human beings and their nature although I feel those days are gone. So I guess my question is has anybody else felt like this or had this experience

Thanks for the commiseration, @Mrsomebody. The new staff member at the front desk didn't know how to handle a complaint, who to pass it to, but when I said that I'd been looking at the website and would be happy to escalate it to the hospital's complaints officer, it was amazing how quickly she found my case manager's bosses' boss to talk to me.

Hello @Gwynn and @Mrsomebody,

Thank you for your honesty and sharing your raw feelings around engaging with mental health professionals in the past. I would like to relate to your frustration and feelings of being invalidated which I have experienced in my past with family, friends and mental health professionals. I however have also had really positive experiences with mental health professionals too and today am really grateful that those negative experiences didn't deter me from connecting with them at times where I really needed the support. I have since had the most remarkable experience within my recovery and turned around a corner to a much better space internally and I must account this to the guidance of my regular psychologist. I have realised that it has been a process of trial & error advocating what I need to find the right fit for my recovery.

I know there are some good ones out there, it's just... the process of finding them! *sigh*

My pdoc charges $170 for 45 mins, which means I pay $50, after medicare. His receptionist touts the fact that he charges a little less, than some .... as a great thing .... He is not a bad person, and tries to make some connection each visit, yet it is more of a habitual exercise in keeping track of meds, which he has various software packages for, and writing a script. I guess I am lucky he charges me $30 less than your dude or dudesse ....I would not lodge a complaint, and need the thread of support to keep on keeping on.

I really do not think the cost reflects the value recieved, but more my isolation and lack of social capital. I know many people without education or professional work history will defer ... to the ... so called 'level of expertise' .... but it does not sit well with me ... as I have worked in many government and personal enterprise fields. I really believe it should be unethical to charge over medicare.

There is an issue that people are actually being paid while taking advantage of vulnerable clients to vent or experiment without proper oversight or repercussions.

I have not been much of a complaint person, just too tired and bruised.

I will be raising it with my lawyer next week though ...

the system needs to be held accountable ...
