Disconnected

It's been a month since i gave birth to my beautiful baby girl after 38 hours of labour. But i still feel no love and no connection to her. She's cute but thats as far as it goes. To me she is a burdon and a chore. My partner loves her to bits and has a great bond with her. I just want to chuck her out in the trash half the time. I look after her, i feed her, i restrain myself from wanting to strangle her. Shes relatively healthy apart from the bronchitis she hax at the moment. I dont hate her, but i dont love her either. I fell in love with my puppy within the first day, Why cant i feel that with my own flesh and blood?

Am i a bad person for feeling this way? Is there something wrong with me?

Re: Disconnected

Hi Rick13, Lola here, one of the moderators. I am concerned about you and your baby and sent you an email a few hours ago but haven't heard back from you. Call PANDA which is a service specifically for mothers suffering from depression. Their number is 1300 726 306. Or call lifeline on 13 11 14. Take care, Lola

Hi @R1CK13

You are not a bad person, not at all. You really need help and support. It is a difficult time for you. I hope you can come back on here and let us know you and your baby are okay.

Thinking of you at this difficult time.

pls take care, xxxooo

Hi @R1CK13
No your not a bad person at all. You are describing exactly how I felt when I had my baby, I felt so lost & like I had made the biggest mistake of my life. I went to my Doctor & had a chat with him & it completely changed my life for the better. You have taken a huge step reaching out on here, please let us know your going okay & give PANDA a call. Thinking of you

Re: Disconnected

Last night was the first time i said to my baby girl that i love her. It happened after she almost died. It is sad that it took me a near death experience to feel love and protection for my daughter. But hopefully it was what inneeded to break this curse

Re: Disconnected

Hi @R1CK13 and the community members who have written encouraging responses to you @4me4us @BlueBay @Seven7 & @lola. That sounds so powerfully moving and scarey all at the same time. I would like to let you know that you are not alone in feeling disconnected from your baby.

It is a very real experience that 1 in 10 women and 1 in 20 men experience. Feeling disconnected from your baby and having negative thoughts about her are a very serious symptom that needs an assessment by a health professional. Ideally they will hold a degree of expertise in mental illness in the perinatal period. PANDA Helpline (1300 726 306) is a National service that can help you to find the right help.

This crisis jolt to your emotional connection may only be temporary. It is important to reach out and seek help from someone you trust. Has it been difficult to reach out? Often we do not need to seek help until we have a baby to care for. Can you do it for her?

There are others on the forum who will have experiences of finding it difficult to seek help for mental illness. There is no shame in what is often a biologically driven response to pregnancy and childbirth with such a significant hormonal adjustment. There are really effective treatments available and many things that can assist you to regain a sense of who you want to be as her mum.

The love you felt for her last night has always been there. It takes a lot to open our hearts. Memories of painful heartbreak can close off our ability to stay open to the love we feel. Your baby needs you to be well and your experience last night probably let you know that big time. I wish for you the support and kindness that you need to grow into your motherhood. It does not happen just with the birth of your baby. Motherhood develops over time by being stretched and challenged to be for another often what we ourselves have needed from our mothers.

I will be thinking of you.
