First post

Hi, this is my first time posting on saneforums. I am struggling to work out the process so I am hoping this is it. I have a long history of depression, self harm and suicide attempts as well as addiction and eating disorders over my life time. I experienced sexual abuse as a child and emotional abuse from my mother who has always been highly judgemental and emotionally shut down. I was dismissed from my job after many years as a professional about 5 years ago due to these issues. It was very hard as my work was the only positive in my life. 6 months ago I sold up and moved to a country town where I lived briefly decades ago. I know a few people here and I am geographically closer to my daughter, grandchild, mother and siblings than I was, but not too close. I need a careful balance between contact and space. Boundaries are a big issue for me. I have not made contact with anyone outside my family since living here, partly due to covid but mostly shyness, feeling inadequate, feeling unworthy of friendship. I have always isolated to keep myself safe. I receive telephone counselling through Victim's Services and just had a session. I made a goal of ringing one specific person and saying hi, and another of contacting someone I knew years ago who lives across the road and making a time for a brief visit. Both are scary. I would like to let you know how I go. I am also dealing with my daughter who is a single mother of a 21 months old baby needing to stay with me for the past 3 months due to being too sick to stay in her own home. I love them immensely but living with them has reduced my ability to self nurture and put demands on my money, time, space, privacy and body (pain impacted by caring for the baby). My mother has Alzheimers and lives with one of my siblings and I care for her occasionally to give them a break. It is very challenging as her dementia has reduced her filters even more than before so I need a thick skin when I am with her but I am getting better at managing that. I actually enjoyed spending 2 days with her earlier this week. I have been doing pretty well emotionally since I moved and have not had any self harm or suicidal behaviours or urges, but I am still up and down. Yesterday and today I have been teary and felt vulnerable. At the moment I am struggling with finances, chronic pain, loneliness and having unrealistic goals for myself and feeling hopeless when I don't achieve the them. Anyway, it feels good to share all this. I will wait to see if I get any response to see if I feel supported or validated and if I feel safe in the process. Best wishes to you all.

Hi @Littleme ,

Welcome to the forums. 💛

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the moment, so it's completely understandable that you're feeling overwhelmed, teary and vulnerable. I know for myself, if I don't have time to self-nurture and be on my own due to competing demands, my mental health can take a really big hit too. It's great that you have set some time aside for yourself to share your story with us today. I'm wondering if you have any professional supports in place?

I also want to acknowledge that on top of managing your own struggles, you're also caring for your mother. I wanted to share that there are many in the community who would be able to support you in the carers forum too.

I hope that you find a supportive community here,

Re: First post

Hello @Littleme

Sounds like you are vulnerable but also have a lot of strengths and resilience, in that you did work professionally and manage your own household alone, while giving space to your offspring in times of need. That is already a huge achievement. Not sure what field you were in. Having realistic goals is tricky as we do not always know is possible to achieve until we try, so there is a level of stretch and risk involved.

I have many similarities. Worked professionally for over 30 years but only part-time while I managed family and a neck disability. My goal was to do my best, but that backfired as it contributed to me discounting my own internal signals of what was enough and contributed to my neck pain, reducing my capacity.

I had a period I was getting counselling from Victim Services. I have a very different style of boundary in a sense in that early violations and neglect meant I had very little sense of boundaries, and a huge resistance to the whole concept as I was stuck on ... bridging gaps ...

and reaching out ... and love .... and all that ...so boundaries are a new ongoing conscious learning endeavour for me.

Pressing the @ button and a person's name will tag others through hypertext.

There are some good people here and a lot of us who struggle. Things can go awry when we share and expose our tender parts .... but mostly people try and there are community guidelines ... so it is not like social media ...

I might sign off .... Stay safe ... but continually am confronted by silly things that happen that show I am not well wired for staying safe ....def work in progress

Take Care

Re: First post

Hi and welcome, @Littleme , it's good you've joined.

I am impressed that with all the conditions you suffer you are still helping your family in a big way, your mother and your daughter. Especially your mother who emotionally abused you...wow, I'm not sure I could do that (thinking of my own lifelong emotional abuse by my father).

I'm also very sorry to hear you suffer chronic pain 😞

Feel free to type any topic into the search bar above to find threads on that topic.

I hope you find the forums supportive. 🙂
