Feeling burdensome - TW: suicide

Feeling burdensome - TW: suicide

So I was watching a movie called Loving Vincent. It's an animated movie, all done in paintings, about the final days of Vincent van Gogh. It's a very well-done movie, but it made me sad. Eventually it comes out in the course of the film that the ailing Vincent van Gogh is financially dependent on his brother, who is strapped for cash himself with poor health. In the film, van Gogh's doctor confesses that he said that without the burden of van Gogh, the brother might live better - and goes on to say that he believes that that planted the thought of suicide in van Gogh.

It's made me think about the future, and how I am a burden on my own family. I am safe, just sad and a bit lost in bad thoughts.

@Gwynn

I watched that and found it deep and moving, and yes sometimes triggering. I could only see it in small bits at a time, as there was a lot of resonance for me with my family situations. Being triggered can come from many different sources.

I believe Each life is unique and precious in its own way. We all try our best and that ought to be enough. Take care of you and keep looking for the stars when the night is dark.

Re: Feeling burdensome - TW: suicide

Hey @Gwynn, I just wanted to stop by to say that as difficult as those feelings of being a burden are to sit with, they are also totally 100% valid. They can also be super tricky to try to shift, especially if they're a little ingrained. I can see why the conclusions the film seemed to reach about Vincent's brother could trigger those thoughts and concerns for you too, maybe even amplify them.

I'm curious though if you've ever shared or asked your family about these concerns, or thought about sharing these concerns? For me, I've had a few experiences of sharing similar concerns about feeling like a burden (and/ or being half convinced I am), only to be incredibly surprised to learn I'm in fact not thought of as a burdern at all and the loved ones who have been there and who have supported me have done (and continue to), do so because they genuinely and deeply care about me.

Sending hope and good vibes,

Re: Feeling burdensome - TW: suicide

Thanks, @TideisTurning, I recently did a pile of shredding - one of the papers I shredded was something from when I was about six years old - a petition from my mother to some government agency or another for more support for me, due to my lifelong disability. In it, she wrote that my younger brother was acting out to get her attention, which she could have provided better if it were not for the paperwork and extra care that came with me. It kinda hurt to see it written down, but I see where she was coming from. I don't think that sharing my feelings of being a burden with my parents will get me a wholesome resolution.

That is so hard @Gwynn and I'm really sorry to hear that's something you've had to see. I can understand from that where sharing may not be the right solution for you, and that's ok. It's amazing that you have the awareness that's not likely to be the right thing for you, and I trust you will find the thing/s that will be a better fit. In the meantime, there are many here happy to sit with you and listen as you go. All the best and take good care 💙

@Gwynn

That is a difficult situation to sit with.

Looking back on childhood scenarios can be helpful if we can reframe them in a helpful manner. Helpful to your reality and your family, as struggling human beings. We are all struggling human beings, and it is definitely not a level playing field ....

I have read old official documents and had many different reactions. I file them away ... and then maybe read them 5 0r 10 years later and notice completely different things.

Sometimes we can be in confirmation bias mode ... so may interpret things to confirm our sense of self doubt or lack of worth.

You have been a positive presence on the forum. @Gwynn I dont know many things ... but please take that on board ... in your heart.
