Topic Tuesday // Strategies for coping during the holiday season // Tuesday 21st December, 7:00- 8:30PM AEDT

Hi there SANE Forums Community,

This fortnight we invite you to join in a discussion about strategies for coping during the holiday season. As we near the end of what has a been a particularly difficult year, many of us will will be looking forward to festive celebrations and rejoicing in farewelling 2021. There will also be many of us for whom the holiday season may be a particularly trying time, stirring up emotions such as loneliness and isolation, grief and sadness.

With many support services closed for the holidays, this makes accessing support tricky, which is why our next Topic Tuesday will be dedicated to a discussion on strategies for coping during the silly season. We'll be joined by a SANE counsellor who will be sharing their tips for coping with all the difficulties that may arise for members of the forums during this period.

We all bring our own experience with us to the holiday season, so we will look forward to hearing from the community about your experiences and strategies for coping with some of the obstacles during the Christmas and New Years period.

Join us in exploring strategies around:

  • Isolation
  • Navigating family tensions
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Service closures
  • Where to seek help

Please join the discussion here on Tuesday the 21st of December 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEDT to follow this conversation.

@Lani, I think that @pisces_1 has made a really astute observation – people really only do let us see what they want us to see. So many of us "mask" their feelings in public, that doesn't diminish what you are going through 💙

Sometimes I can talk about her but other times it’s just too sad and difficult. I just know Christmas is going to be so hard. I would love to give it a miss but all the family want me to be there and it’s not fair to them if I’m not.

So sorry for your loss. In 2 years my husband and I have lost all our parents. 4 of them. But loosing mum has been the hardest so far. I’m not saying I wasn’t sad when the others passed but with mum it’s just been so different. The loss has been unbearable

Question 4: As families come together to celebrate Christmas, this is often a time that can elicit tension and conflict within family dynamics.

@pisces_1 , can you speak to some of the themes you’ve noticed as a counsellor around this topic, and provide a few tips for managing relationships when conflicts arise.

There are always times when relatives aren’t on the same wavelength when it comes to certain topics and this year, many clients are struggling to see eye-to-eye with relatives around the Covid vaccination.

  1. Be aware of how you’re feeling each day. Be aware of your own and other people’s moods and levels of stress, before engaging with others. This awareness will help you to choose an appropriate time to talk about an issue.
  2. Practice active listening – if others feel heard first, they are more likely to give you space to share your point of view and hear you.
  3. Communicate clearly and stay on topic. Use ‘I’ statements to ensure that you’re taking ownership of your feelings and staying focused on your personal experiences, rather than someone else’s actions. By doing this, the other person will not feel that you are criticising them.
  4. If it becomes increasingly difficult to remain calm, ask the other person if you can both take a break before continuing the discussion again calmly.
  5. Before the event, contact your relative and see if you can both agree to not talk about the topic of conversation.

I think maybe the best thing over this coming holiday period is to switch off TV and do nothing.
Tune out from the world.
Much of loneliness in my experience is heightened by media spin on what everyone else is doing.
Also better to go somewhere or do something on your own and just be an individual and not worry about what's happening around

Thank you. When I’m crying my husband asks why? So I just try to cry in private when I’m alone at night and he has gone to bed. But on saying that, I have gone to the toilet just so I can cry alone with out him asking why I’m crying. It’s just me, I don’t want to make others uncomfortable
